Save the Oxford House!
The museum grounds currently have ten nineteenth century structures furnished with period furniture and artifacts including the Berry Cottage, Blacksmith Shop, Center Grove Schoolhouse, Chapel on the Bosque, the John Tarleton Ranch House (founder of Tarleton State University), and others.
Weddings can be held in the Chapel on the Bosque or on the museum grounds, and the Center Grove Schoolhouse is available for receptions and meetings.
The museum hosts two events annually: Bygone Days and the Native & Heirloom Plant Fair.
The museum gift shop is the perfect place to pick up souvenirs or gifts for friends and relatives. Ghost stories, crimes and scandals can be found in books written by local authors. Stephenville commemorative posters and coloring books by a local artist and many other treasures are waiting to be discovered.
The beautiful museum grounds, with flower gardens maintained by volunteers, are a popular backdrop for family photos.
The Stephenville Museum was established in 1966 after the Stephenville Twentieth Century Club and the Stephenville Study Club urged the City of Stephenville to purchase the museum property in order to move their early historical artifacts and assorted collections they had been displaying in the public library. That same year the Study Club appointed a museum board and signed the articles of incorporation.
Currently the Board of Directors are made up of fifteen men and women from different walks of life, but all have one common interest--perserving the beauty and history of Stephenville and the Erath County area.
