Guidelines for Completing a Society of the War of 1812 Application
Finding and Verifying Records pertaining to one’s family genealogy:
1. Receiving a family history collection from the Internet or from a favorite “aunt” who wrote out the family’s history CAN provide many names and “teasers”. However, in essence, these sources have NO VALUE because they do NOT provide proper documentation for marriages, births, deaths, military service or other information. It is just a place to “START”.
2. Documentation must be provided utilizing the US or individual state census’: copies of family Bibles [including the front page which provides the name/date of the publisher]; pension applications or War Records from the National Archives; photos of tomb stones with dates, census records, true copies of office birth and/or death records; and wills mentioning the names and relationships connecting one generation to another.
3. Only this type of officially documented information is accepted by the Society of the War of 1812. A copy of Ancestary.com listing the documentation is not acceptable; a copy of the actual document is required.
4. If you are using the electronic file, the final application needs to print out on acid resistant bond paper using front and back of the paper. This paper can be found at Staples, OfficeMax, Office Depot or Kinko’s, it is heavier than copy paper.
5. Each generation listed on the application MUST be separated by a sheet of paper SHOWING the generation NUMBER along with document information in order to readily distinguish the documentation relationship for that generation” , such as # 1, #2, #3, and etc.
6. Provide only ONE set of documents to support the application.
7. Provide TWO sets of the application itself and an additional copy of the war record(s).
8. Provide TWO copies of any war record verification.
9. The following fees were approved by the membership during the March, 2010 meeting. Checks should be made out to Texas Society of the War of 1812.
"A discussion regarding the perpetual fund and obligations to pay the National Society for perpetual members. A motion to increase the perpetual dues from $300 to $500 was seconded and approved. Another motion to increase annual member dues from $27 to $45 was seconded and approved. Another motion to increase the application and supplemental from $30 to $60 was seconded and approved."
