Martin V. HOOVER, aged 89 years, 11 months and 12 days, an old resident of Chetopa and a large land owner in this vicinity, died Saturday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Willard HAZEN, in Fort Worth, Texas, after an illness of about three weeks. Maladies incident to his age were the cause of his death. He is survived by his wife, seven children and five grandchildren. The body was brought to Chetop and funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Methodist church, Rev. Harry R. Weed officiating and burial being in Oak Hill cemetery.

Mr. Hoover was born June 24, 1841, in Ohio. He moved from that state to Iowa with his parents and when he was nine years old accompanied them to Texas. During the Civil War he served with the Texas Rangers for a time, later engaging in the cattle business extensively until about (47 or 17) years ago, when he and his family came to Chetopa, which had since been the home. Here he bought land and engaged in farming and stock raising until his infirmities compelled his cutting down his activities to merely looking after his properties. For the past several years he had spent most of the time in Ft. Worth, the climate there being better for his wife.

He and his wife, who before here marriage was Miss Martha Anne MATTHEWS, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary several years ago. They were married in Texas. The surviving children are: Mrs. Carrie LYONS of Fort Worth, George W. HOOVER of El Paso, Tex., Joe A. HOOVER of Fort Worth, Will M. HOOVER of San Francisco, Calif., and Martin R. HOOVER of Fort Worth.

All of the children except Matthew HOOVER accompanied the body here for burial. He was with his father at the time of his death but was compelled to return to Los Angeles. Mrs. Hoover, although in fairly good health, was unable to make the trip. A short funeral service was held at Ft. Worth --Chetopa Advance-Clipper
