BEFORE YOU WRITE

Due to the volume of email I receive everyday (between 400 & 700 emails), this has become necessary.

Please read the following before you send your message.... it can provide information for you and help both of us!!

Please understand that if I can not help you now..... you may not receive an immediate answer from me. I'm not being  intentionally rude but I have many responsibilities as volunteer webmistress, listmistress, etc. Also being a wife, mother, daughter, etc. place demands on my time also. I'm working very hard to get resources & real data online and that is very, very time-consuming. I read and keep all messages.... sometimes, at a later time I may contact you if I think that I might be able to help you in some way. Please try to understand!!

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO:
(1) Send me a GEDCOM or Database file, etc??
(2) Send a query or list surnames??
(3) Change your email address??
(4) Something you sent has not been posted??
(5) Ask me for a lookup??
(6) Subscribe or unsubscribe from a email discussion list??

I sponsor 9 USGenWeb County sites, a genealogy humor site, two "surname" sites, I am webmistress for many mail lists, maintain a huge personal homepage and a couple additional personal websites as listed below. I have created, edit & maintain over 2000 actual individual web pages and I am adding more daily.

PLEASE REMEMBER:
(1) MOST IMPORTANT: Never attach a large GEDCOM or database file or other file to your message without letting me know & getting permission first..... In the last few months, on three different occasions someone has sent very large files and this caused my email servers to "lock-up" and the only way to resolve the problem was for the ISP's to delete everything that was waiting to be downloaded. Once, over 130 emails were lost & I have no way of knowing who sent the file nor what other messages were lost.  I have one email addy which seems to handle large files better than the others, so always ask me first.

No one can do your genealogical research for you!! My responsibility as a sponsor of a USGW Project County site is to provide visitors with information as to what is available both offline & online and other general information. There are some professional genealogists in some areas that you could hire to do research for you but "generally" you must do this work yourself.

QUERIES:
(2) If you are wanting to submit a query on a county/surname site....... please go to the "Query Submission" section of the county/surname site and submit it there. (see below) Those sent directly to me only create a delay in your query being posted and the possibility of you receiving help with your query. I don't have information on everyone who ever lived in a particular county, nor every individual with a particular surname . Each of the counties/surname sites I sponsor also has a email discussion list (see below) which is an excellent place for your queries also.
(2a) If you are wanting to ask me a question about someone posted on MY personal genealogy sites then email me directly.

REMEMBER: most USGenWeb county sponsors may not live in the county they are sponsoring. I live in only one of the counties I sponsor and have never been to the one I sponsor in Georgia. I don't know which is the "best" flower shop in town. <bbg> I can't possibly remember the "Wilson's" that lived down the dirt road from the "Lindsey's" who happen to be someone's great-grandmother!! I hope you will begin to understand why this message has become necessary. If you post something and I think I have information that might be helpful, I will contact you.

SOMETHING YOU'VE SENT HAS NOT BEEN POSTED:
(3) If you have submitted something to be posted and more than two weeks have passed.... please send me a reminder message and/or the information again. The problem could be an oversight on my part, lost email, etc. There is also the possibility that it is on my "TO DO" list and just hasn't been done yet but please don't hesitate to remind me. EMAIL ADDRESS CHANGES:
(4) If you plan to change email addresses.... you should plan to unsubscribe from any mail lists you belong to from your "old" email address first.... then re-subscribe from your new email address. If your email starts bouncing because you changed email addresses and did not do the above then you may be automatically unsubed by the list software and you will be missing post that might be very important to you. If you have followed list instructions for both subbing or unsubbing and are still having problems then .... Email Me

If you are needing to have your email address changed on one of the pages I maintain.... please include the site name... (i.e. county site or surname site) and the URL of the page/pages on which your old email address appears. With over 2000 pages I can't possibly know exactly on which page/pages your email address appears. Please don't assume that I remember that it may be listed in several different counties also. ASK ME FOR A "LOOKUP":
(5) Information on lookup volunteers are listed on the county/surname sites... I have volunteered in a couple of counties but have very little time myself. Please ask only those who have volunteered in those counties. I would love to be able to help everyone in every county but that is not realistic. If requesting a "lookup" for one of the volunteers, please be very specific and do not expect them to provide information on more than a couple of items of information at a time. NEVER ask for "every" Johnson buried in xxxx county, for example!! You will probably receive much more help if you ask a specific question than just listing surnames or very general questions.

(6) Check below for the "help" page for the email list you are wishing to subscribe or unsubscribe from and follow the instructions there.

REPORT A URL THAT IS NOT WORKING:
(7) Remember that the internet is a very, very busy place and web traffic is much heavier at certain times of the day and for certain sites. If the link you are trying to connect to is a very busy site then expect that there WILL be times you can't connect. Try again later.... if you still can't connect, then by all means, let me know. If the URL is to one of my pages I will try my best to discover & fix the probelm and, if not, I may have to remove the link. Still need to Email Me?? YES

REPORT A EMAIL ADDRESS THAT IS NO LONGER VALID:
(8) I receive about 20 messages a day notifying me that a email address posted on one of my pages has bounced. People seem to change email addresses about as often as the seasons change. Unless I am notified by the person who change their addresses there is not much I can do..... however I can delete or make note that the addresses are no longer valid. Email Me

VOLUNTEER TO HELP:
(9) I can certainly use all the help I can get!!
Types of HELP NEEDED:

• Lookup volunteers: If you have resource materials for any of the counties or surnames I sponsor and would be willing to be a lookup volunteer, please make a list of your resource/s.... Title, author, date published, brief description of resource.
• If you have non-copyrighted data.... example... you have inventoried a cemetery and would like to share that data please let me know.
• Volunteers are needed to transcribe census records.
• Are you willing to inventory a cemetery?
• Would you be willing to help maintain GenConnect Boards?
• Could you "watch" over one of the Mail Lists for a few days.... if I have to be out of town, etc. This would mean you would handle "bounces", questions, etc.?
• Do you have suggestions, ideas, etc. that can make the sites be of more use to the visitors?
• Any other data or ideas?
• Volunteers to scan or type obituaries in the counties I sponsor.
• Volunteers to report events (reunions, homecomings, genealogy meeting or conferences, etc) in the counties I sponsor.
