Monday, September 14, 2009 - 7:00pm - "Breaking Your Brick Walls: Bring your bricks" - A panel of seasoned genealogists will assist you to identify possible ways to break your brick wall, climb over your brick wall or go around your brick wall. Bring your “brick wall” genealogy problem and challenge our panel. The panel will include Martha Jones; Bettye Pribyl; Patsy Hand; Jo Ann Oliphant; Betty Trotter; Etta Shepherd & Billye Jackson.

• November, 2005 - "Extractions of Vital Records", taken from the files of the Victoria Advocate by Ross Adamson, Betty Trotter and many other volunteers, was awarded second place by the Texas State Genealogical Society.

• March, 2005 - The Victoria County Webpage was awarded TXGenWeb Project County of the Month.

• Congratulations are in order for Doris Obsta and all her helpers for being awarded first place by the Texas State Genealogical Society in 2001 and 2004 for THE HISTORY AND HERITAGE OF VICTORIA COUNTY, TEXAS. Way to go, Doris!

• The Victoria County Webpage, edited by Cynthia and Jack Buttram, was awarded second place in 2001 by the Texas State Genealogical Society, third place in 2002 and Distinguished Award in 2003. In 2005 the webpage received first place, the Award of Excellence and in 2006 the webpage was given the Outstanding award by the Texas State Genealogical Society.

• A Resolution of Commendation was presented to Doria Obsta and VCGS by Victoria Co. Commissioners' Court, January 15, 2001, for the publication of THE HISTORY AND HERITAGE OF VICTORIA COUNTY, TEXAS.

VCGS is a partner society of the Texas State Genealogical Society , District 3. Kenneth Booth of VCGS is the District 3 Representative.

  FLAG OF VICTORIA COUNTY

  This flag was first unfurled October 28,1936 on the occasion of the Texas Centennial celebration and commemoration of the 112th anniversary of the founding of Victoria in 1824 by Martin de Leon. It was designed by Postmaster Leopold Morris and painted by Sister M. Fidelia of Nazareth Academy. It portrays Alvar de Nunez de Vaca, Spanish explorer, the first white traveler in Texas (1528) who lived among the Indians in the vicinity of Victoria; Robert Cavalier de La Salle, French explorer whose colony, founded in 1685 in Victoria County, was the first white settlement in Texas; and De Leon's cattle brand, said to have been the brand of the royal family of Spain and the oldest in Texas in point of origin. The "E" and "J" connected stand for "Espiritus de Jesus" or the Spirit of Jesus. This emblem was contributed by Harold Johnston, grandson of Leopold Morris.
