Civil War Veterans Obituaries

We would like to share with researchers our Tribute to Civil War Veterans who lived out their lives in Van Zandt County. Many came here from other states. The following is an obituary found in the collection of old newspapers on microfilm in the Library of Genealogy and Local History, Canton, TX. If you have an obituary of a Civil War Veteran ancestor and would like to share, please contact Sibyl. We would be happy to add your material to this site.

Wills Point Chronicle
June 18, 1908

Henry F. Goodnight was born in Marshall county, Kentucky, Nov. 11, 1844, and came to Texas in 1849. With the exception of a little more than two years, which were given to service in the Confederate army, he has resided continuously in Texas. Mr. Goodnight came to Wills Point in 1875 and was engaged in the drug business here for 18 years. He has been president of the Van Zandt County National Bank since its organization, taking an active part in the management of the bank's affairs. Mr. Goodnight is prominent in Masonic circles and is one of the county's best known and most highly respected citizens.

Editor's Note: Mr. Goodnight and his wife were brutally murdered on 07 Jun 1916. For more details of this tragedy, see Van Zandt County Genealogical Society quarterly "Our Heritage," a full two part account, August and November, 2000.
