Sibyl Creasey and Shirley Fuller have extracted news articles from two old county newspapers, the Canton Herald and the Wills Point Chronicle. These newspapers have been microfilmed and are housed at the Van Zandt County Library of Genealogy and Local History, located in the courthouse annex in Canton, for the benefit of researchers. Copies of these articles are also available by writing to the Van Zandt County Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 1388, Canton, TX 75103. CANTON HERALD, May 6, 1932
"Friends and relatives of Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Brown of Wallace community gave them a surprise birthday dinner Sunday, May 1, it being Mrs. Brown's birthday. Relatives present were: J.T. Brown and family, Arthur Brown and family. A.L. True and family and little Ruby Fay Wilson. Friends present were: David Norman and family, Levi Batey and family, John Montgomery and family, Mrs. Lue Sailing and children, Walker Norman, Noal Warron and Davon Thurston, Willie Dee Hamblen, Clifford McManus, Theodore Roberts, Jewell and Julia Patrick, Wilber and Dempsey Morris, Sidney Heard and Mrs. Dave Corey. There were fifty seven in all. All reported a nice time and wish for Mrs. Brown many more happy birthdays. Mrs. Brown is 65.
"Henry B. McGrady died Wednesday, April 27. He was born Sept. 16, 1857, being in his 75th year at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife and six of the nine children born to this union, all of whom are married. He was a good citizen and the family has many friends who will join this paper in extending condolences to the bereaved ones.
"MARRIAGE LICENSES: The following marriage licenses have been issued since last reported in this paper: W.P. Dawson and Edna Mae Mott; Irby Morrell and Kate Williamson; E.F. Nance and Morine Wheeler; Ben Shumaker and Vertie Lee Clements; M.J. Williams and Mattie Sprecley; Morres Florez and Anieta Juarenz; Robert Everett and Mrs. Emma Franks; George Willison and Mrs. Myrtle Leach; Thomas M. Adams and Celeste Farish.
"There will be an all-day progressive singing Sunday, May 10, at the Bois D'Arc church. Everybody is invited to come and bring a well-filled basket. Plenty of water and shade and space for parking. J.D. Hobbs is president of the Bois D'Arc singing class.
"LOCAL HAPPENINGS: Minor Burns spent Tuesday in Temple. Allen Travis was in Jacksonville last week. Hubert Scott was a Greenville visitor last Sunday. J.E. Persons of Grand Saline was in town Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie West were Canton visitors Saturday. Mrs. W.B. Rodgers was a Wills Point visitor Monday. Miss Cora Lawler of Dallas was a weekend visitor to Canton. Mrs. A.R. Pirtle and children visited Myrtle Springs last week end. Addie Mary Barnes left for Center having a position in that place. Wiley Loughmiller, who has been teaching in the Arc Ridge school is at home. Miss Reba Henry of Denton was the guest last week of Miss Miram Lawler.
"Miss Allie Tull visited Walter R. Anderson and family in Greenville last week end. Mrs. Arch Gary of Henderson was the guest of Mrs. Frank Roscoe last Friday. Miss Daisy Chitty of Grand Saline was the guest of Mrs. H.F. Blackwell Wednesday. Mrs. Tull and daughter, Miss Allie, left Tuesday for Gilmer to visit Mrs. Leslie Florence. Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Andrews of Grand Saline were visiting H.J. Craft and family Sunday. There will be a sacred harp singing the third Sunday in May at Lone Star or Tundra. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Evans and Mrs. J.W. Stewart of Terrell were in Canton Saturday.
"Baxter Jordan, who is attending school at Commerce, visited Canton friends over the week end. Mr. and Mrs. Milton Thomas and little daughter, Mary Ann, are here for several days from Greenville. Mrs. Gid Breco and Mrs. Davis Breco from Ada, Okla., visited relatives and friends for a few days. Mrs. P.T. Slater of Dallas is visiting friends in Canton. Mrs. Slater was formerly Miss Alla Bee Lawler. Mrs. and Mrs. Gladstone Thomas and little daughter, Martha Nell, of Dallas visited relatives during the week end. Mrs. Irvine and Mrs. Gilbert of Mabank and Mrs. Richard Powell of Kemp visited Mrs. John E. Sides Saturday.
"Mr. and Mrs. B.B. Corban and Mrs. J.D. Phillips of Tyler and Mrs. J.W. Davidson of Wichita Falls were Sunday visitors of Mrs. J.K. Todd. Mrs. Hazel Lorange of Montreal, Canada, and daughter from McCamey visited friends for a short time on their way back to Montreal. S.J. McCauley and family spent Sunday in Denton with their son, Loyd, who is a student in the teachers' college and daughter Florence, of C.I.A."
