Van Zandt County Genealogical Society

Sibyl Creasey and Shirley Fuller have extracted news articles from two old county newspapers, the Canton Herald and the Wills Point Chronicle. These newspapers have been microfilmed and are housed at the Van Zandt County Library of Genealogy and Local History, located in the courthouse annex in Canton, for the benefit of researchers. Copies of these articles are also available by writing to the Van Zandt County Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 1388, Canton, TX 75103. CANTON HERALD, August 5, 1932

"Announcement has been made of the marriage of Miss Bessie Mitchell to Tommy Black of El Paso, the ceremony being performed in El Paso, July 28, where they will make their home. Mrs. Black is well known in Canton, the daughter of B.A. Mitchell. She was one of the most popular of the younger set, up to her going to Dallas, where he has been for the past ten years being employed by the Palace Theatre. There she held one of the most responsible places in their office. Mr. Black has been living a number of years in El Paso, where he is connected with an oil company.

"J.H. Wages of the Jackson community celebrated his 77th birthday a few days past. Mr. Wages has for a number of years made this a day to have all of his family and friends gather at his home for the day. A feast is spread, and a renewing of old friends. At this time it was not possible that all his children be at home, but a number of them and a host of friends were present to wish him more happy birthdays.

"J.D. Thompson, well known as Jeff Thompson, died at his home suddenly, Thursday night of last week. Mr. Thompson lived most of his life near Canton and was 59 years old. Services were held at the residence at 8 o'clock Saturday morning, after which burial was in Mt. Pisgah, conducted by Rev. Marvin Fuller of Memphis, Texas. He is survived by his wife and six children.

"LOCAL HAPPENINGS: Mrs. Jay Riley was a Dallas visitor Friday. Mrs. Lida Sides of Dallas is the guest of Mrs. Jim Couch. Mrs. Homer McPhail was a Grand Saline visitor last week. Mrs. Lemar Sides and daughter, Marvon, are in Fort Worth this week. Mrs. Mary Ethel Brandon is spending the week with friends in Dallas. Mrs. Anna McMahon and Miss Oma Mayne are in Mineral Wells for a two weeks' stay. Mr. and Mrs. A.D. Boyd of Athens were guests Sunday of Mrs. and Mrs. Paul Stanford. Mr. and Mrs. Kelly Raines and children spent several days with Mr. and Mrs. Ray Dyke. Miss Ailene Anderson of Greenville is the guest in the home of her grandmother, Mrs. Mollie Tull.

"Miss Monette Coffie of Woodville, Okla., is a guest in the home of her aunt, Mrs. Dean Mathis. Mrs. G.J. Brittain, Mis Mary Elizabeth and Doyle Brittain of Houston were visitors to Canton last week. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sides of Dallas spent the week end with Mr. Sides' parents, Mr. and Mrs. John E. Sides. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Yantis and little daughter of Kilgore were the guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. Owen Springer. Mr. and Mrs. G.L. Florence of Gilmer were here this week visiting Mrs. Florence's mother, Mrs. Tull, and family. Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Scott of Hayden are spending the week in the home of their daughter, Mrs. Willis Terry.

"Mrs. Gertrude Hubbard and Miss Margaret Atkins left Tuesday for a two weeks' in Cisco, Fort Worth and Dallas. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Stanford and children of Wichita Falls spent the week end here with Mrs. C.L. Stanford and family. Miss Marguerite Rodgers is in Wills Point for a few days visit. Miss Elizabeth Spinks of Dallas was a week end visitor here. Miss Roxie Stanford, who has been teaching in summer school in Dallas, arrived home last Friday and plans to be here with home folks for a few weeks. R.L. Martin of Prescott, Ariz., is in Canton and other parts of Van Zandt county for a two weeks' stay. Mr. Mathis formerly lived in this county and has many warm friends who welcome him back.

"Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Compton, after spending two weeks with Mr. Compton's mother, Mrs. Donie Compton, have returned to their home in Center, Miss Wanda Compton going with them for a visit. Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Ashworth had for their guest last week Mr. and Mrs. Alton Ashworth and son of Emory, John Mac Ashworth and son of Mineola, Miss Beola of Denton and Mrs. and Mrs. J.D. Rogers of Wills Point."
