Van Zandt County Genealogical Society

Sibyl Creasey and Shirley Fuller have extracted news articles from two old county newspapers, the Canton Herald and the Wills Point Chronicle. These newspapers have been microfilmed and are housed at the Van Zandt County Library of Genealogy and Local History, located in the courthouse annex in Canton, for the benefit of researchers. Copies of these articles are also available by writing to the Van Zandt County Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 1388, Canton, TX 75103. When requesting a copy, please send a check or money order for $2 to cover cost of copying and postage.

CANTON HERALD, August 12, 1932

"Kermit C. Holmes, Medicine Mound, Texas, was the successful bidder on the Grand Saline-Tyler mail contract. Mr. Holmes commenced on his new duties on August 1. The mail contract requires two round trips each day to Tyler from Grand Saline. The contract was let on a bid of $1294 per year.

"Ben Wheeler: The hot dry weather the past two months is causing the cotton to shed off all squares and small bolls. Miss Duie Blanch Bobbitt of Dallas is visiting relatives and friends of this place. Miss Hazel Ruth Dean of Chandler is visiting her grandmother, Mrs. Huddle, and other relatives. Mrs. Willie Fletcher and children of Goose Creek spent the past two weeks with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will Turner. Mrs. Emma Walker and children spent last week with relatives at Vernon. Miss Adell Hanes of St. Louis is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Odis Hanes, and family. Mr. and Mrs. Autley Land returned to their home at Goose Creek Saturday after spending two weeks with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elie Land, and Mrs. and Mrs. Albert Clark.

"LOCAL HAPPENINGS: Miss Margie Moon is in Rusk with relatives and friends. Mrs. Alton Cheney spent last week with Mrs. Leach in Denton. Miss Mary Ben Thomas has gone to Shreveport for a two weeks' visit. Miss Minnie Falls of Cameron has been visiting Miss Cora Lawler. Jack Poole of Dallas is spending the week with his cousin, Bobby Lively. Miss Janie Weir of Wills Point is visiting her niece, Mrs. W.B. Rodgers. Mrs. A.D. Sparkman has gone to Wharton to visit her mother, who is ill. Miss Maxine Taffer of Terrell visited Miss Marguerite Shields for several days. Miss Dorothy Jane Tull was the guest last week of Mrs. Bryan Henry of Athens.

"Misses Hazel and Inez Shields of Fruitvale are guests of their aunt, Mrs. J.M. Shields. Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Ashworth and son of San Antonio are spending some time here. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Lively and sons, Bobye and Frank, were in Dallas on Thursday. Reginald Settles, the small son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Settles, is visiting in Kaufman. Miss Julia Lucille Lively is the guest of her cousin, Miss Ethel Dorothy Poole, of Dallas. Mr. and Mrs. A.A. Dawson entertained at their home Tuesday, the Tuesday Bridge Club. Five tables enjoyed the game after which a refreshing plate was served.

"Victor Wattner and Alfred Barfield of Stone Point were visiting with Lloyd McCauley. Miss Agatha Landry of Tyler is the guest of her grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. L.W. Shoemaker. Mrs. B.B. Corbin, Francis Corbin and Mrs. Rena Ware were guests of Mrs. J.K. Todd on Friday. Mrs. Byron Henry has returned to her home in Athens after spending several days with relatives here. Miss Cleo Beard, who has been visiting relatives and friends in Breckenridge, arrived home last Sunday. Mrs. J.W.Barnes, who is suffering from an infected foot, is now with her daughter, Donnie Compton. Miss Effa Nell Thomas has returned home after a visit of two weeks with her sister, Mrs. Guy Ashworth, of Shreveport, La.
Mr. and Mrs. George Yates and daughter, Lavern, have returned home after a visit to Hot Springs and other points in Arkansas. Mr. and Mrs. Loyd Elliott of Dallas and Mrs. Horace Waymer of Laredo were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Sides Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Gladstone Thomas and little daughter, Martha Nell, spent the week end at Shreveport, La., with Mr. and Mrs. Guy Ashworth. Mrs. Alice Mitchell, Lorene Mitchell, Mrs. Era Utts, Misses Bonnie and Rose Blackwell drove over to Grand Saline Friday night for the band concert.

"Buddie Jenkins, age 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Jenkins of China Grove, died Tuesday night. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock at old Bethel cemetery. Mr. Jenkins was the son of Uncle George Owens. Mrs. Bert Barlow has as her guests, her mother, Mrs. A.J. Hall, of Mabank, and Mr. and Mrs. Grady Hall of Sweetwater. Miss Zeffie Knox of San Diego, California, is here visiting relatives and friends. Mrs. Knox formerly resided here and has many friends glad to see her.

"A party of 28 young people of Canton motored to Myrtle Springs park for swimming Monday evening. After the swim was over a picnic lunch was spread. Mrs. Virgil Lee McCallum and son, Buddy and Bobbie Gene, who have been visiting Mrs. McCallum's parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Smith, have returned to their home in Dallas. Douglas Neilson, who has been visiting his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. C.F. Riley, left for San Antonio Tuesday. His aunt, Mrs. M.B. Brackney, went as far as Dallas with him to spend a few days.

"Bob Wisdom is suffering from a broken arm, which happened Sunday while trying to crank a car. He was carried to Terrell for treatment, but is at home again and is getting along nicely, although suffering quite a bit. Miss Genell Moon, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. R.B. Moon, is in the Terrell sanitarium, having undergone an operation for appendicitis. At this time she is doing nicely and her many friends hope to see her at home soon. Miss Mariane Sparkman is home from Belton, where she has been in school this year at Baylor College as a student of voice. Miss Sparkman was one of the outstanding members in the Baylor College Choral club, which made a tour of the leading towns in the state this past season.

"Mrs. Loughmiller, Julia Frances and baby, Mary Beth, Mrs. Haynes, Mrs. Todd and Mrs. Smith and little granddaughter, Juanita McCallum, enjoyed a picnic supper at Mocking Bird Lodge Tuesday evening, August 9."
