Biographies and Obituaries
We are compiling as many biographies and/or obituaries of the early ministers of Van Zandt County during the years 1848 to 1920 as we can find. Some lived in the county a short time but some lived out their lives here. We welcome submissions if you have an ancestor who was a pastor or minister at any time in this county. Email us, or write to the Van Zandt County Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 1388, Canton, TX 75103.
Jesse Chaney was born on January 21, 1889 in Alabama. His parents are unknown. He is first found in Van Zandt County living as a boarder, age 21, on the 1910 census. He was a school teacher and probably came to this county to teach. He married one of his students, Ludie Mullins, born June 27, 1889 to Jesse William Mullins and Alice Roslin Stone Mullins in Overton, Smith County. They had no children. Jesse served as teacher, census taker and at one time, Justice of the Peace. He died November 29, 1950. Ludie died April 1, 1971. There were both buried at Edom Cemetery.
