These stories have come from a variety of sources, some from old newspapers, some from descendants and some have been previously published in the Van Zandt County Genealogical Society's quarterly publication, "Our Heritage." Thomas J. High
Thomas J. High, president of the Old Settlers' association of Van Zandt county, was born at Somerville, Tenn, March 18, 1849. His family moved to Kaufman county, Texas in 1852, and to Van Zandt in August of the same year, settling the place on which Mr. High still lives, He has therefore, been a resident of Van Zandt for fifty-two years. He was married Sept. 22, 1868, to Miss Mary Paschall and to the union eleven children have been born, eight boys and three girls are living. Mr. High had always been foremost in matters pertaining to the advancement of the county and there is no more loyal or enthusiastic man than he. He has been honored by the people of the county with the important office of county treasurer for ten years, having been first elected in 1878.He was elected again in 1880, then in 1886, 88 and 90. He filled the office to the entire satisfaction of the people and the Democratic party of which political organization he has been a very active member. At the last meeting of the Old Settlers he was elected president of the association and will preside at this meeting.
