Tombstone Photos of Van Zandt County

Van Zandt County Genealogical Society

Tombstone Photos of the Van Zandt County Cemeteries is a new project and will be ongoing. We are beginning with just a few photos but hope to have more shortly. We hope this will help Van Zandt County researchers who are unable to visit the county of their ancestors and relatives and cemeteries of the area. If you would like to share your tombstone photos of anyone in any Van Zandt County cemetery, this would be greatly appreciated. Just Email us and we will be happy to post them on this page. Check back often as we will be adding more.

Levi was born in Raleigh, North Carolina and by age 15 was on his own, working out on a farm and as far as is known, his parents were deceased. Before 1860, Levi moved to Hardeman County, Tennessee and lived with the Baker family who were also from North Carolina. Levi met his future wife, Mary, who was related to the Baker family.

On May 25, 1861, Levi enlisted for service with the Confederate Army in Bolivar, Tennessee. He began his duty with Co. G of Polks' Light Artilliary Battery. The Battery participated in the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862, under Cheatham's Division. Before 1864, Levi had re-enlisted in Newsom's 18th Tennessee Calvary, under General N. B. Forrest. Levi participated in the Battle at Brice's Crossroads near Guntown and Baldwyn Mississippi. Levi and his family lived in Baldwyn, Mississippi from about 1862 to 1895 when the family relocated to Martins Mill, Van Zandt County, Mississippi
