Historic Tree in Van Zandt County

Submitted by Fran Bolton of Bedford, Texas

This lovely tree is located in the Starr Community in Van Zandt County. A short biography of Barney Archibald Monroe states, "When he cleared his land for farming, he left a few trees for ornamental purposes, and this South Red Oak was one of them, which trew to be recorded by the Texas Forest Service as a possible champion Southern Red Oak." The children were not allowed to climb on it, so it must have been majestic already in the early 1890's. (Mr. Monroe purchased the land on which the tree is located in the early 1890's.)
