Old Family Photo Collections Van Zandt County Genealogical Society
The photos on these pages are generously contributed by Milda Mason of Alto, New Mexico. Her ancestors were early settlers in Van Zandt County and these wonderful old photos are much appreciated. In addition, there is a very interesting story on this family and the Bottoms family on our "Old Tales, Stories Page" that you don't want to miss. If you would like to share your old family photos by placing them on this web site, please contact Sibyl Creasey for instructions.
George Washington Scott Submitted by Milda Mason
This ambrotype (photograph on glass) has been tinted.
George Washington Scott was born March 7, 1868 in Scott Community, later Fairview, Van Zandt County Texas.
He was the son of Major Henry C. Scott and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Scott who were in Van Zandt before 1860.
In 1880 Henry went with his sister Betty and her husband Bomar Moore to Checotah Indian Territory Oklahoma.
During this period George is known to have owned and ran a race track there in Checotah.
At one time while in Indian territory he was arrested for murder by the Indian Police. The Federal Marshal came from Fort Smith Arkansas to investigate and found it was a case of mistaken identity and he was released.
On September 21, 1895 his sister Betty's unarmed husband was shot in the back by a Creek indian named Robert John "Bob" Gentry, and his sister and her children had been burned out of their homeplace and Betty and her children had returned to Canton.
George followed them back to Van Zandt shortly thereafter.
On May 17, 1898 in Wills Point, he married Helen Malissa Austin. She had previously been married to Philip H. "Phil" Wolfe who died in 1895 and is buried in Creagleville Cemetery.
George died in Van Zandt about 1904 and is buried in Scott Cemetery on his father's farm, but this tombstone has been destroyed.
His wife remarried to Charles E. Stromberg May 14 1905 in Canton.
