Old Family Photo Collections Van Zandt County Genealogical Society
The photos on these pages are generously contributed by Milda Mason of Alto, New Mexico. Her ancestors were early settlers in Van Zandt County and these wonderful old photos are much appreciated. In addition, there is a very interesting story on this family and the Bottoms family on our "Old Tales, Stories Page" that you don't want to miss. If you would like to share your old family photos by placing them on this web site, please contact Sibyl Creasey for instructions.

Mariah Louisa Stanley was born 10 July 1830 in Tennessee, the daughter of Elias Stanley and Lurana Smith.
In 1847 she married Levi "Lee" Moore, the son of James Moore and Cynthia Hardcastle (see picture).
Louisa and Levi moved to Van Zandt County by 1850 from Hardeman County, Tennessee, and all but one of their 12 children were born in Moore Community in Van Zandt.
2 of her sons, Elias James and John Thomas were participants in the gunfight at the circus in 1870, with John being shot in the back by Robert Florence.
The story of the gunfight can be seen elsewhere on this site. See Gunfight at the Circus
