James C. aka Augustus B. Hickey

Submitted by Milda Mason of Alto, New Mexico

This daguerrotype is labeled on the case as Jim C. Hickey, taken in Arkansas before the Civil War.
James C. Hickey was born in December 1841 and died October 23, 1909. He was the son of William R. and Louisa Hickey. James enlisted in the Civil War in Arkansas. According to family legend, James either killed or thought he killed, a man in his own Union Company. James then deserted his Company. He believed the US government was hunting him, so he assumed the name of his recently dead brother, Augustus B. "Gus" Hickey, and came to Canton Texas. While in Canton, he met Ava Jane Moore, the daughter of Levi Moore and Louisa Stanley. He married her in Canton on January 5, 1871, as Augustus B. Hickey. Whether or not Ava Moore knew of the alias is not known, but she certainly did in later years. Their 8th child was named James C. Hickey and they called him "Little Jim."
After Jim Hickey died, Ava Moore Hickey applied for a Union pension which was rejected because "of his desertion." It now appears that he assumed his dead brother's name without reason. Although he obviously never knew it, the government was never looking for him. There is no mention of any killing in his military records.
He is buried under his real name.
