Old Family Photo Collections Van Zandt County Genealogical Society
The photos on these pages are generously contributed by Milda Mason of Alto, New Mexico. Her ancestors were early settlers in Van Zandt County and these wonderful old photos are much appreciated. In addition, there is a very interesting story on this family and the Bottoms family on our "Old Tales, Stories Page" that you don't want to miss. If you would like to share your old family photos by placing them on this web site, please contact Sibyl Creasey for instructions.
CONSCRIPTED INTO GERMAN ARMY
This is Joe Kirmer, born 19 April 1889 in Bavaria.
His parents immigrated to the US when he was 5 years old.
Just before WW1 began he returned to Bavaria to visit family.
The war began and since he had not yet become a naturalized American citizen he was conscripted into the German Army. The Germans were not sure of his loyalty, however, and put him to work as an accountant.
Immediately after the war, he returned to the States, became a citizen and married. He and his wife Anna owned a boarding house in St Louis, Missouri.
