Old Family Photo Collections Van Zandt County Genealogical Society
The photos on these pages are generously contributed by Milda Mason of Alto, New Mexico. Her ancestors were early settlers in Van Zandt County and these wonderful old photos are much appreciated. In addition, there is a very interesting story on this family and the Bottoms family on our "Old Tales, Stories Page" that you don't want to miss. If you would like to share your old family photos by placing them on this web site, please contact Sibyl Creasey for instructions.
George Washington Tull, born 1827 Submitted by Milda Mason of Alto, New Mexico
George Washington Tull was the child of James Stephen Tull and Mary Martha (Ruff) Noble.
He was born January 4, 1827 in Dekalb, Georgia and died February 26, 1917 in Canton, Van Zandt County, Texas.
George lived near Bolivar, Hardeman County Tennesee in 1849, and followed his parent's family friend, James Moore and his wife Cynthia Hardcastle, to Van Zandt County, Texas.
After a short stint in the California gold fields, he returned to Canton, Texas, where he became partners with James Moore in Tull's Mercantile, on the SW corner of the City Square.
He later married Sarah A. "Sally" Moore, daughter of James and Cynthia Moore, in Canton, on July 16, 1861. George and Sally had one child, Romilda Martha Tull, born May 6, 1862. Sally Moore Tull died October 7, 1862. George then married S. N. Mason, in Canton, between 1863-1864. The date is missing in the marriage records. I have not found any information on S. N. Mason, but she died before April, 1866.
George then married, in Canton, on April 12, 1866, Sarah Jane Wages, the daughter of William Thomas and Susanna Wages.
George and Sarah had 2 children, neither of whom lived a year. Sarah Wages Tull died October 8, 1868.
George then married Mary Jane "Mollie" Cowan in Canton, October 11, 1869. Mollie was the neice of Cynthia Hardcastle Moore, and was known to have a small lisp.
Mollie and George had 11 children, and are known to have raised 2 orphaned neices, Jenny Lewis and Martha Burke.
Both my grandmother and myself are named after Romilda Tull, the only child of George Tull and Sarah "Sally" Moore.
