While he was gone, his father William H. McBee, his sister Rebecca (McBee) Karber Roberts and his two brothers William Newton and Silas P McBee had all died. His sister Nancy Jane (McBee) Scroggins her husband Daniel and their children, his half brother Robert B. his wife Mahala (Jay) McBee, his sister Rebecca's two sons Henry L and Jasper Newton Karber and his own daughter Narcissa Jane who had married Edward William (Bill) Cameron in 1869 and moved to Dallas County, were the only member of his family still living. John Garvin had inherited much of his father's original land grant, and his brother's portion of that land.
