Normal Music Class of Martins Mill Submitted by: Reagan Sides
This photo is from the collection of Judson Sides, paternal grandfather of Reagan Sides. Judson is the third man from the right on the top row, but unfortunately his face is somewhat obliterated by the crease. The only other person identified is Franklin Lycergus Eiland in the center of the group. A very close inspection of the picture shows that the choir is using Eiland's 1893 hymn book "The Promised Crown." The photo was probably taken around 1900, when Jud would have been about 25 years old.
His family did not know that Jud was musical, but they have discovered another picture of him in the 1901 Martins Mill Band, on page 29 of the book Martin's Mill* by Carlye Mae Wallace. That book may be out of print. All Regan has is a photocopy of it given by a friend, Linda Lovvorn. (She is the daughter of Tince and Bonnie Dee Nixon Abbot, who just passed away in October 2003, of Canton.)
If anyone out there can identify some of the other folks in the picture, and maybe even date it more accurately, let us know and we will add the information.
*A copy of this book may be viewed at the Van Zandt County Library of Genealogy and Local History, located in the courthouse annex in Canton.
