Walker County

Welcome

Walker County Courthouse

Walker County is a county located in the US state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, its population was 67,861. Its county seat is Huntsville. Initially, Walker County was named for Robert J. Walker, a legislator from Mississippi who introduced into the United States Congress the resolution to annex Texas. However, Walker later supported the Union during the Civil War; thus, in order to keep the county's name from being changed, it was renamed for Samuel H. Walker, a Texas Ranger and soldier in the American Army.

James Mitchell (1795–1870) and his wife, the former Calpernia Franklin (1805–1865), came to the future Walker County under a Mexican land grant in 1833. Mitchell, who became one of the first county commissioners, established the Mitchell House and Inn on the Old San Antonio Road, also known as El Camino Real. During the 1840s, the house was a stop for weary stagecoach travelers.

Mustang Cemetery Work Party March 7 2014

We are going to have Hamburgers and Hot-dogs again this year. Glenn will bring his pit to cook and will eat lunch about 12:00. Please bring your Owen drinks and tools. You do not need to bring lawnmowers maybe a weed eater. Remember your Chairs and your ice chest. Please let me know if you are coming so we can have a head count, so we will know how many burgers and hot-dogs to purchase.

News: This past year we removed 15 dead trees from the cemetery and cleaned around the fences. We are sorry to say that we lost some of our family members last year; Michael “Mickey“ Powledge Bowman, Shirley Fay Love Cates, Beverly Ann Morgan Christian, Walter Wayne Coleman, Bobby Lee Doughtie, Robert Lee Goodman Jr., Dean Keisler, Ann Irene Fleming Morris, Amber Rayann Rich, and Donald Morace Williams.
