The Biography of Colonel Santos Benavides
Santos Benavides, the highest ranking Mexican American to serve the Confederacy, the son of José Jesús and Margarita (Ramón) Benavides, was born in Laredo, Texas, on November 1, 1823. See: Texas, 33rd Regiment, Company H.

John Zirvas Leyendecker
"John Zirvas Leyendecker emigrated to Texas from Germany with his parents and siblings aboard the ship Riga in 1845 and settled in Fredericksburg. He became a sutler and merchant in Oak Creek, Texas, near Fort Chadbourne, and later in Fredericksburg and Laredo, Texas, where his wife's family was located. He was postmaster in Laredo from 1858 to 1859. During the Civil War he was assistant quartermaster there, and he remained there permanently after the war."

Leyendecker married Juliana Benavides and served with Refugio Benavides in Company I, Texas Regiment 33, CSA.

Eduardo Idar, Tejano journalist and civil-rights worker, born in Laredo, married to Jovita Idar.

"She lived in Laredo, Texas, right on the Mexican border. During the Mexican Revolution, many injured people went there, and she took care of them. She also wrote for Spanish-language newspapers and started schools for Mexican-American children. She co-founded the League of Mexican Women, which focused its work on education for poor children."
