Wilbarger County, Texas
was established on 1 February 1858 and was named in honor of Josiah and Mathias Wilbarger.
The county was organized 10 October 1881 with Vernon chosen as county seat.
Vernon was originally established as a trading post in 1877.
It was located on the Western Trail, and was the center of the W T Waggoner Ranch.
