The first census was taken in 1801, and it has been continued every decade since then. Due to wartime restrictions, the census due in 1941 was not taken, and the 1931 returns have been lost to fire. The first censuses were just statistical returns, although occasionally a fuller list may survive. The first to retain names and household units was that of 1841, with those of 1851 and later giving details of relationships and birthplaces, that can of course be of immense value to the family historian. The law as it stands now allows a census to be available to the general public only after a period of one hundred years has elapsed. This means that the lastest census to be currently available is the 1901 census and the next census to be released will be the 1911 census on 2nd January 2012. The PRO have now made the 1901 census available, with a complete name index, on the Internet. Also the 1901 census can be consulted on fiche at the FRC, The National Archives at Kew, and in local record offices and libraries.
1901 Census Vouchers - These enable you to buy credit to look at the pay-to-view pages of the 1901 census, and they remain active for a period of six months from their first use (unlike credit card payments which expire after 48 hours even if not all the minimum payment of £5 is used up). The Society now has vouchers (Value £5) for sale, available from the Secretary:
Brian Prosser, 6, Birch Meadow, Gosmore Road, Clehonger, Hereford, HR2 9RH
£5 each accompanied by a stamped self-addressed envelope.
The census returns for England and Wales 1841-1901 are held at the Family Records Centre, 1 Myddelton Street, Islington, London EC1R 1UW.
The Scottish records are held at New Register House, Princes Street, Edinburgh EH1 3YT.
The LDS also have copies of the census on microfilm, usually they need to be ordered - unless the branch is local to the area you are researching.
The Herefordshire County Record Office holds microfilms of the original census records for the whole of the county of Herefordshire, plus some adjoining areas for the period 1841 to 1901.
The Herefordshire Family History Society has transcribed the 1851 Census for Herefordshire as a NAME INDEX. It gives details of ages, parish of residence and full PRO reference.
