HEREFORDSHIRE FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY

The Herefordshire Family History Society was formed in 1980.

We are a member of the Federation of Family History Societies and a Registered Charity, No. 517785. Our membership has increased over the years to approximately 850 members worldwide.

The Society publishes a quarterly Journal, free to Members, which includes helpful articles, members interests, and a query and help section. Articles submitted for publication by members are always welcomed. The Journal Editor is Phil Bufton and articles can be sent to: Phil Bufton, 3, Cagebrook Avenue, Hunderton, Hereford, HR2 7AS. Meetings are held every 3rd Friday of the month and a speaker is usually invited. If you would like to know more, then click HERE.

A Herefordshire Marriage Index has been compiled by members from the parish registers, some as early as 1538, up to the commencement of civil registration in 1837. Information from the index can be extracted for a small fee. For Members, a non-returnable charge of £1.00 for one specific marriage searched, 50p for each further marriage searched, plus SAE or IRCs. For non-members, a non- returnable charge of £1.00 for each marriage searched, plus SAE or IRCs. Wider ranging searches by negotiation. Minimum £3.00 plus SAE or IRCs.

For marriages 1754-1837 contact Mrs. V. Hadley, 42 Centurion Way, Credenhill, Hereford, HR4 7FF.

The Society is now involved in the National Burial Index, co-ordinated locally by Yve James, Fir Tree Cottage, Tickbridge Lane, Hamnish, Leominster, HR6 0QL (email: yve@rjes.demon.co.uk). If you would like to know more, then click HERE.

A Strays Card Index is also held, giving information about Herefordshire people, of events (Baptisms, Marriages, Burials, etc) which have been recorded outside the County. The Strays Co-ordinator is Mrs. A.M. Smith, Shady Gardens, Garway Hill, Herefordshire, HR2 8RR

The Society also has a Reciprocal Research Co-ordinator, Mrs. J. Stadler, Parkhouse Green Cottages, Bookhurst Road, Cranleigh, Surrey, GU6 7DN who puts members in touch with fellow members researching the same names.

We have completed the Herefordshire 1851, 1891 and 1901 Census Name Indexes. We are also recording and publishing all the Monumental Inscriptions of Herefordshire Parishes. Correspondence connected with the Journal should be addressed to the Editor. All other correspondence unconnected with any of the special responsibilities of the committee members (see COMMITTEE) should be sent to the Secretary, Mr. B. Prosser, 6 Birch Meadow, Gosmore Road, Clehonger, Hereford HR2 9RH (email: prosser_brian@hotmail.com). All letters requiring a reply should be accompanied by a stamped addressed envelope. Overseas enquirers should send two International Reply Coupons. (Air Mail rates being so high, if reply coupons are not sent, any reply will be sent surface mail).

Herefordshire Family History Society is registered with the Data Protection Commissioner.

Personal data provided to the Herefordshire Family History Society by members (including names, addresses, email addresses, member's interests etc) are held on a computer database and may also be held in a manual filing system. This data will be processed by the Society, and may be published in the Society Journal. This data will not be used for any other reason other than for the legitimate purposes of the Society.

Members are requested to inform the Membership Secretary immediately of any changes to their personal details.

If you wish to obtain a copy of the data processed relating to yourself please contact the Membership Secretary. The Society is entitled to charge a statutory fee for the provision of this information. At the present time this is set at £10.

SORRY - We NO longer have a US dollar account, which means we can only accept cheques in Sterling.
