The governors of Hereford Infirmary recently had seven applicants for the vacant post of Resident House Surgeon. As they all appeared equally qualified the governors chose Samuel WAUDBY as they learnt he was likely to stay longer. The other candidates all got a bit uppity and have complained, albeit rather politely. The autopsy was carried out in a barn next to the Pencombe church, with men and boys at every available door and window. WARNING: The original version of the autopsy, described in full & minute detail, should not be read by anyone within six hours before or after a meal. The outcome was that the death was natural and that the surgeon, Mr John SHELTON of Bromyard, did all he could for Mr WILKINSON during his illness. The latter made Mr SHELTON his executor & sole beneficiary. The diocesan court, despite objections from relatives, ruled that the will was perfectly legal.

29th June There are now stricter precautions regarding the safety of the Queen, including a plain clothes policeman at the tradesmens’ entrance during the day. ♦ A proclamation states that the new half-farthings are legal tender to the amount of sixpence, i.e. you can offer up to 24 at any one time. ♦ A Mr BROWN, in the Baptist church in Bristol, announced the hymn and then fell down dead.
