The
troubled political history of Ukraine, which motivated the large Ukrainian immigration to
the United States during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, is contained in a dry
survey followed by an inadequate discussion of immigrant life in America, with a focus on
religion and culture. A final chapter notes the achievements of famous Ukrainian
Americans.
Black-and-white and color
photographs. The immigrants from virtually every part of the world are described in their
remarkable ethnic/racial diversities and their patterns of resettlement. Discussion of the
historic forces which sent them to the United States or Canada, their cultures, religions,
languages, their arrival and adaptation to the new homeland, and the achievements of
individuals will lead to enlightened appreciation of ethnic diversity. Bibliography,
index.
