Obituary index for BERESFORD REPUBLIC, Vol. 30, 1923 The following is an index of obituaries which were published in the "Beresford Republic" in the year 1923. The paper is weekly and is published every Thursday in Beresford, Union County, South Dakota. The first issues of 1923 were listed as No. 28-52 of Volume 28, and No. 1-26 of Vol 29. Starting with the Nov 1 issue of 1990, the paper's new editor began a numbering scheme which was consistent with the volume numbers of the paper's earliest issues; but, the newer scheme started numbering the issues of the volumes at the beginning of the calendar years. For purposes of simplicity, the volume number listed for this index is based on this more recent numbering scheme. Because of the inconsistencies of the volume and issue numbers, publication dates are more important. Any information not listed in the fields below was not provided in the original obituaries. In cases where the date of birth is not given, the age at the time of death is given in that field instead. The dates listed with an asterisk are funeral dates; because, a dates or years of death were not listed in the obituary. A surname with an asterisk represents the name of an individual whose date of death was listed within the obituary of another individual. In 1923, Beresford, SD still had a second weekly newspaper called "Beresford News," also published every Thursday. It is worth noting that both papers published different obituaries for the same individuals. And, the obituary from one paper sometimes contained information that was absent in the obituary from the other newspaper. And on occasion, one paper published obituaries that were absent from the other paper. However, the following index was compiled only from data found in the "Beresford Republic." Some married women were listed only by their husbands names. In those cases, the husband's name is listed in the first name field inside [ ]. Some misspellings may have come from the original published obituaries. As a rule, less formal death notices tended to lack any detailed biographical data on the individual. Therefore, formal obituaries for individuals were indexed here whenever possible; but when none were available, the less formal notices were indexed instead. The Beresford Public Library is authorized to archive copies of this index for use by patrons. This index was compiled by Brian M. Hass. The author of this index does not keep an archive of the obituaries listed. This file may be freely copied by individuals and non-profit organizations for their private use. Any other use, including publication, storage in a retrieval system, or transmission by electronic, mechanical, or other means requires the written approval of the file's author. This file is part of the SDGENWEB Archives. If you arrived here inside a frame or from a link from somewhere else, our front door is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/sd/sdfiles.htm No obituaries were published on Jan 4, Jan 18, May 10, Jun 21, Jun 28, Jul 26, Sep 20, or Dec 6 of 1923. Notes: In addition to the regular issue of the "Beresford Republic," a separate "Historical Edition" was also published on Jun 7, containing historical articles on Beresford and South Dakota. The issue was published to honor the town's 40th anniversary. An article about the history of the "Beresford Republic" newspaper was published in the Jun 28 issue. The Feb 8 issue mistakenly listed the publication date as Feb 15 on the front page. The front page of the Oct 18 issue mistakenly listed the publication date as Oct 11. The news of President Harding's death first reached Beresford when N. P. Nelson heard it over the radio, as the Omaha radio station signed off at 10pm. Nelson then reported the news to the "Beresford Republic." At the time, a number of Beresford citizens possessed radio receivers; but, articles in the "Beresford Republic" indicated that most regarded radio as being more of a curiosity rather than a serious news medium. At the time of this radio announcement, most people in Beresford had not been tuned in due to the amount of static. By the end of 1923, fifty radios were operating in Beresford; and, a list of the sets' owners was published on Dec 13. The father of Mrs. Martin Nanninga died on 20 Mar 1923. The father of Mrs. G. A. Hegstrum died on 5 Jul 1923.
