HON. D. W. ALLEN

Councilor from the Fourth District, was born in Fairfield in 1845. When five years of age his parents moved to West Waterville, where he attended the public schools. In 1861 he became a clerk in the hardware store of J. H. Gilbreth in Fairfield. At the age of twenty-two he associated himself in the hardware business with A. F. Gerald, under the firm name of Gerald & Allen. This copartnership existed four years, at the expiration of which time Mr. Allen became a member of the new firm, Allen & Totman. They did a large business for nearly sixteen years, when Mr. Allen became the head of the firm widely known as D. W. Allen & Co. He has grown to manhood in the hardware business, and is one of the enterprising men of his section of the State. He has never allowed himself to be a candidate for political honors previous to his present office.
