HON. ORMANDEL SMITH

SECRETARY OF STATE, was born in Aroostook County in 1843, and came to Kennebec County at the age of ten years. His early education was acquired in Litchfield Academy and Waterville Classical Institute. He afterwards taught for many years, and also worked on a farm. In 1870 he represented the towns of Litchfield and Monmouth in the House of Representatives, the same year receiving the appointment of duputy United States marshal to take the census. In 1874 he was elected assistant clerk of the House, and in 1876 clerk of the House, holding the office for six years. He was appointed insurance commissioner in 1883, but resigned in 1885 to accept the position of Secretary of State. He was unanimously re-elected in 1887, and in 1889 was accorded the unprecedented honor of a third appointment to the same office, which he now holds.
