St. Francis Cemetery, Glebe St., Taunton MA
In a small corner at the back of the cemetery, there is a cluster of several very early Irish graves. The dates range from 1831-1858, and they are much older than the other burials in the rest of the cemetery. St. Francis is in the west end of present-day Taunton, and probably would have been a distinct settlement/village in the early to mid-1800s from the central part of the town where St. Mary's Cemetery is located.

The cemetery abuts the public Oakland (or Glebe St.) Cemetery, and although there is no barrier between the two, other than some evergreen trees, the boundary line is easy to figure out. Most of the earlier burials in the cemetery are Irish, with a few French and other ethnic burials. Only those that are or appear to be Irish are included here. We have completed, first, transcriptions of all the stones that have a place of origin in Ireland. We are now working on transcribing the rest of the existing stones. When we first started to visit this cemetery, there were no markers to identify the sections. It was only some time later that marker posts were erected and a map was posted at the cemetery. So, our earlier transcriptions have several sections grouped together. (7/07 - Sections 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13 and 15 completed)
