TOTALS - Families – 27; People – 153; U.S. citizens over 21 – seven.
The deputy or assistant marshals who took the census were provided with detailed written instructions covering the various elements of the census along with the directive that it be performed with "absolute accuracy." It was mandatory to have entries for each person listed in columns #1 through #7 and #10. The instructions further stated: "The inquiries in columns numbered 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 19, and 20 are of such a nature that these columns only require to be filled when the answer to the inquiry is ‘Yes’." In these columns where appropriate the enumerator indicated "Yes" with a vertical slash [/]. In addition the directives stated that no report of personal property would be made if under $100.
The census-taker enrolled all of Clarkston on August 11th and went to Newton where on the same day he started the census of Newton which he finished on August 12th.
Some aspects on the 1870 Clarkston census:
1). Probable mistakes - he listed some youngsters attending school at age five or less. See family #1 and #15 for examples of children at ages 5 and 2 cited as "At school." He was not consistent his in listing of those in school, sometimes they were cited as "At school" and at other times as "At home."
On the children less than a year old, the fraction of a year and the birth month listed don’t add up.2). Names – The handwritten records can be difficult to decipher and this along with the enumerator’s spelling, some extraordinary flourishes in his script and the interpretation thereof could result in a scrambling of some names. This enumerator had a strong tendency to write Danish names that ended with "sen" by listing them as "son." All of the Danish names, except Benson, should have had the "sen" ending. The Benson family had changed their name from "Bendtsen" to Benson. Several of the names are slightly different from the form used today.
Due to the circumstances at Clarkston and Newton at the time of the 1870 census, both must be checked before determining where individuals were at the taking of the census, and if some people were missed. At least one or two, possibly more, families were missed at Clarkston in 1870.
3). Missing families –
a). Johannes Dahle with his wife and two children. He was among the first settlers in the founding of Clarkston in 1864. In February of 1870 as part of the planned re-location of Clarkston to a new site, thirty-six heads of families from the planned soon to be abandoned settlement of Clarkston and the new settlement of Newton entered into an agreement to commit 254 acres into a co-operative farm at Newton. In the written accord Johannes was listed as "John Dahle" and he pledged fifteen acres in this agreement. All but two of these men can be found on the 1870 census either at Clarkston or at Newton.b) "Bates" with no first name cited and he pledged five acres. In the next census in 1880 for Newton there was a Thomas Bates.
Why were they missed? A possible explanation would be the fluctuating situation in these two settlements just prior to the August 11th and 12th taking of the census. The planned relocation of Clarkston to a new site under the direction of stake leaders had been in effect for about a year and half and had proceeded in stages until early June of 1870. At that time President Brigham Young was touring the northern settlements in Cache Valley and while at Newton some opposed to this move asked the Church President if they could remain at Clarkston. The planned move was aborted when President Young gave permission to have both settlements retained. It produced a very fluid situation wherein some who had previously relocated to Newton moved back to Clarkston, and several families who came from elsewhere to the newest settlement in Cache Valley stayed a very short time in Newton and then moved to Clarkston. Under the new circumstances started in early June, it was an individualistic choice, not planned and directed by any leader or group. Just prior to the census there were probably some of those at Clarkston still in the process of deciding whether they would remain at Clarkston or relocate to the new area where much planning, granting of land and other work had been put forth at Newton. At the same time those who choose to remain at Clarkston had been instructed to reposition their settlement westward onto higher elevation to get away from the flooding menace of the original town site. In this situation no one could definitely state if their nearest neighbors were staying or moving, making a condition wherein even with the small number of families at Clarkston on August 11th the non-resident census-taker could miss enrolling some families.
Furthermore, before this time the Johannes Dahle family had moved from the Clarkston Fort area near Clarkston Creek and the county road where all, or almost all, the people resided. They were among the first in this area to move away from the village type settlement pattern to living upon their farm as they established a home on one of their larger pieces of land northeast of the grouped Clarkston homes.
