Washington County Utah Postcards
| The following postcards show the old St.
George that many of us remember -- back when the area's economy was
based on tourism and agriculture. The views from the Red Hill and Black
Hill show cultivated fields where you now find homes and businesses.
The motels and restaurants were busier in the summer than in winter
back in those days as they catered to the traffic from California,
Nevada, and others passing through our area on their way somewhere
else. Everyone knew when California's schools ended for the summer and
when their Easter vacation was so there would be enough help on duty in
the restaurants, gas stations, and motels during those times. Deer
season in late October was a also big time in southern Utah. Many deer
hunters came from California to hunt in our area with local hunters
acting as guides. My grandfather and father both helped feed their
families by running a deer camp at our ranch each year. Before the days
of the I-15 freeway, cars had to travel on old Highway 91 over Utah
Hill, through the Shivwit Reservation, Santa Clara, and finally St.
George which was a good stopping place. My husband and I remember
looking out our back window watching bumper to bumper cars on old
Highway 91 between Santa Clara and St. George on the day after school
let out in California. Now there is just as much or more traffic on
that same road but it is all local. I hope you enjoy looking at the postcards, most of them are mine although a few are scans that were sent to me. I'm always watching ebay and hope to buy more to add to this collection. -CBA |
