Death of Mr. A. L. (Alfred Lewis) Campbell
Mr. A. L. Campbell, one of Botetourt
County's oldest citizens,
was claimed by the strong hand of death early last Saturday morning. While he
had not enjoyed his usual good health for several months he had continued very
active up until the end which came at 4 a.m. on December 31st. The deceased was
born in Botetourt
County on August 17th
1849, and had lived most of his life in his native county. He was a kind
neighbor, a loving husband and father and a friend to all who needed him. He
will be greatly missed in his home and community. Funeral services were
conducted at the home, three miles north of Fincastle at 2 o'clock on Sunday
afternoon by Rev. C. Kelly Hobbs of the Baptist
Church and Rev. J. P. Atkins of the Methodist Church. The remains were laid to rest in
the Godwin Cemetery. The grandsons of the deceased
were the active pallbearers and granddaughters were the flower girls. He is
survived by his wife, his sisters, and the following children: Mrs. Morgan
Pettit, of Hyattsville, MD, Mrs. J. D. Croft (Should be Craft), of White Sulphur Springs, WV, Mrs. F. D. Bolton, of Fincastle,
Messrs. Gilmer Campbell, of Pittsburg, PA, W. C. and R. M. Campbell, of Barbours Creek, R. S. Campbell, of Lower Craigs Creek, and B. D. Campbell, of Roanoke. All of the
Children were present at the funeral.
