Pension Application of Frederick Bott: W5855

Montgomery County}  Sc.

            On this 6th day of November 1832 personally appeared in open court before the Justices of said county Frederick Bott a resident of said county and State aged Seventy five years last October, who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832: That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated: In the county of Dinwiddie in the state of Virginia in the year 1779 (as well as recollected) this applicant volunteered under Colonel John Bannister to form one of a guard of twelve men, and an orderly Sergeant, stationed at Petersburg in Virginia to guard at that place a deposit of munitions of war. His engagement was to serve for eighteen months if he should retain his health, but if he should loose his health then he was to have leave to substitute another in his stead. He did become sick after serving a little longer than six months and having furnished a substitute he was discharged. Afterwards in the county of Halifax in the state of Virginia, he again entered the service of the United States as a volunteer under a Captain John Falkner, by whom, he was marched to the seige of York, where he continued in the service a little more than three months, until the surrender of Cornwallis; Fleming Bates was his captain; [Holt] Richardson his Colonel; [Robert] Lawson was Brigadier General; Washington commander in chief at the siege; on his way to the seige, he passed through Petersburg, Jamestown, and Williamsburg, his services in the whole amount to a little more than nine months. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present, and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state. Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid.

NOTES: The file includes an application made on 14 Feb 1844 in Montgomery County VA by Martha Bott, aged 79 the previous March, stating that she married Frederick Bott on 12 March 1791 and that he died on 14 May 1842. The file also includes a statement from the Clerk of Bedford County VA confirming the date of marriage in that county.
