DEED BOOK 14 (1780-1790) BRUNSWICK COUNTY, VIRGINIA

This Indenture made this twenty fourth of January in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred and eighty, by and Between Ephraim Peebles Christopher Foster Barham Hines and Anne his wife of the County of Brunswick of the one part and William Hines of the County of Southampton of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of five hundred pounds current money of Virginia . . . hath bargained and sold, aliened and enfeoffed confirmed and made . . . and make over unto the said William Hines . . . one certain tract or parcel of land situate lying and being the county of Brunswick and on both sides of the Fox branch and bounded as followeth, to wit: Beginning at and oak the corner tree of John Parhams and Harbert Reeves, thence a straight course along the said Harbert Reeves line to Kirby Moodys line, thence along the said Moodys line to John Turners corner Pine, thence along the said John Turners line to a White oak and corner of Batt Petersons line from thence along the various courses of the said Peterson line to Nathaniel Hicks line from thence along the said Hicks line to a Spanish Red oak a corner of John Parhams and from thence along the various courses of the said Parhams to the Beginning containing by estimation three thousand and twenty two acres be the same more or less being all that tract or parcel of Land whereon Barham Hines formerly lived . . . Witnessed by Phillip Person, David Hines, James Turner, and John Britt. Signed by Christopher Foster (his mark) and Barham Hines. Indenture and receipt endorsed were proved by the oaths of Phillip Person, David Hines and John Britt witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded on February 28, 1780. Deed Book 14, page 1.

This Indenture made the fourth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy nine Between Tarpley Dickerson and Jinney his wife of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Aaron Haskins of the County of Powhatan of the other part Witnesseth . . . for and in consideration of the sum of four thousand five hundred pounds current money of Virginia . . . grant, bargain and sell unto the said Aaron Haskins . . . one Certain tract or Parcel of Land lying and being in the County of Brunswick and containing by Estimation one hundred and eighty two acres be the same more or less on the north side of Cedar Creek and bounded as followeth, Viz, BEGINNING at the moth (sic) of the great branch thence up the said branch as it meanders to Thomas Jones's line and joining the land of William Weaver Richard Ramsey and thence Down the said Cedar Creek as it meanders to the BEGINNING . . . Signed by Tarpley Dickerson (his mark) and Jinney Dickerson (her mark). Witnessed by Stephen Jones, John Robert Jones (his mark), Charles Featherston (his mark), and John Haskins. Indenture was acknowledged by Tarpley Dickerson and Jinney his wife and ordered to be recorded on 27th day of March, 1780. Deed Book 14, page 2.

This Indenture made this the seventeenth Day of January in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred and eighty Between Joseph Tooke of the County of Brunswick and Province of Virginia of the one part and John Crew of the same County and Province of the other part Witnesseth that . . . for and in consideration of the sum of fifty pounds Current money of Virginia . . . doth give grant bargain sell and enfeoff and confirm unto the said John Crew . . . a Certain tract or Parcel of Land situate lying and being in Brunswick County . . . on the south side of Fountains Creek containing by Estimation one hundred acres be the same more or less and bounded as followeth, Viz, BEGINNING at a Scaly bark hickory on the said Creek on Peterson's Line thence along the said line to a Corner Pine on the County line thence along said line to a Corner white oak in the said County line thence a straight line to a Corner Red oak on the said Fountains Creek then Down the said Creek to the first station . . . Signed Joseph Tooke. Witnessed by Henry Walton, John Roper, Henry Mangum, Isaac Ledbetter. At a Court held for Brunswick County the 27th day of March, 1780. This Indenture was proved by the oaths of John Roper Henry Mangum and Isaac Ledbetter witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. Deed Book 14, page 3.

This Indenture made this third day of January in the year of Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty Between John Davis Senior of the County of Brunswick of the one part and John Turner of the said County of the other part Witnesseth . . . for an in consideration of the sum of one thousand pounds Current money of Virginia . . .doth grant bargain and sell enfeoff and confirm unto the said John Turner . . . one Certain tract or parcel of Land lying and being in the County of Brunswick aforesaid Containing by Estimation two hundred and forty six acres be the same more or less it is bounded as followeth to wit BEGINNING at Meherrin at a corner white oak in Robert Batt's line thence along the said line to a corner Pegraw gum in Edds Smiths line thence along said line to a corner white oak in the said line thence to corner sweet gum in said Smiths Cornfield thence to a corner white oak thence to a corner red oak in the line of the Orphan of William Davis dec'd. Land thence along the said line to a Pegraw gum thence to a Corner stone in the old field in the Land of the said Orphans Land thence to a corner stone in the Low grounds thence to a corner hickory in the Land I purchased of Sterling Harris and John Wyche thence to a corner Mulberry on Meherrin River thence down the meanders of the said River to the Beginning . . . Signed by John Davis Senior (his mark). Witnessed by John Roper, David Roper, and Fredrick Davis. At a Court held for Brunswick County the 27th day of March 1780. This Indenture was acknowledged by John Davis a Party thereto and Ordered to be recorded. Deed Book 14, page 4.

This Indenture made this [            ] Day of January in the year our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty Between John Turner of the County of Brunswick of the one part and John Davis Senior of the said County . . . for and in consideration of the sum of Pounds . . . doth hereby acknowledge that granted bargained and sold enfeoffed and confirmed . . . unto the said John Davis Senr . . . one Certain tract or parcel of Land lying and being in the County of Brunswick aforesaid Containing three hundred acres it is bounded as followeth (to wit) BEGINNING at the main run of the great Swamp on John Lissey dec'd line thence along the said line to corner in line thence along said line a sufficient length to make the above three hundred acres by running a straight line a cross from the back line to the main run of the above said great swamp it being the upper end of a tract of Land lying the north side of the said great swamp Containing eight hundred and five acres thence up the swamp to the BEGINNING . . . Signed by John Turner. Witnessed by David Roper, Fredrick Davis, and John Roper. At a Court held for Brunswick County the 27th day of March 1780 This Indenture was acknowledged by John Turner a party thereto and Ordered to be recorded. Deed Book 14, page 5.

This Indenture made the 20th day of July, 1779 Between Joana Finnie & Mary Finnie of the one part and Thomas Bracy of the other part, . . . for and in consideration of four thousand two hundred and twenty pounds Virginia money . . . paid by the said Thomas Bracy . . . do give grant bargain sell and confirm unto him the said Thomas Bracy . . . two certain tracts or parcels of Land Containing nine hundred acres more or less lying and being in the County of Brunswick adjoining the Lands of Thomas Bracy, William Wanvich, Charles Yarbrough and John Steed . . . Signed by Joanna Finnie and Mary Finnie and witnessed by Thomas Tabb, Sally Harrison, James Tabb, Robert Hicks, and William Wells (his mark). At Court held for Brunswick County the 28th Day of February 1780 This Indenture was proved by the oath of Robert Hicks a witness thereto and at a Court held for the said County the 27th Day of March following the said Indenture was proved by the oaths of Thomas Tabb and James Tabb witness thereto and ordered to be recorded. Deed Book 14, page 6.

THE COMMONWEALTH of Virginia To Thomas Stith Andrew Meade and Drury Stith Gentlemen Greeting WHEREAS John Loyd and Sarah his wife by their certain Indenture of bargain and sale bearing date the 22nd Day of November last past have sold and conveyed unto Thomas Lundie the fee simple Estate of fifty Acres of Land more or less lying and being in the County of Brunswick and whereas the said Sarah cannot conveniently travel to the Court of our said County to make acknowledgement of the said Conveyance therefore we do give unto you or any two of you power to receive the Acknowledgement which the said Sarah shall be willing to make before you of Conveyance aforesaid contained in the said Indenture which is hereto annexed and we do therefore command you or any two of you that you do personally go the said Sarah and receive her Acknowledgement of the same and examine her privily and apart from her said husband whether she doth the same freely and voluntarily without the persuasions or threats of her said husband. And whether she be willing that the same should be recorded in the County of the said County of Brunswick and when you have received her Acknowledgement of the same and examined her as aforesaid that you distinctly and openly Certify as thereof in our said Court under your hands and seals sending then there the said Indenture And this Writ WITNESS Peter Pelham Junior Clerk of our said Court the fourth Day of March 1780 In the fourth Year of the Commonwealth. By virtue of this Commission we the subscribers did personally examine Sarah the wife of the within named John Loyd in manner and form as the said Commission requires and she freely and voluntarily Acknowledged the Conveyance hereunto annexed and relinquished her right of Dower in the Lands therein mentioned and she was willing that the same should be recorded in the Court of Brunswick County, Certifyed under our hands and seals this 22d Day of March 1780. Signed by Thomas Stith and Drury Stith. At a Court held for Brunswick County the 27th Day of March 1780 The Commission together with the Certificate of the Execution thereof being returned into Court were Ordered to be recorded. This Indenture made the 21st Day of February, 1780 Between William Wren and Mary his wife of the County of Brunswick and Parish of Meherrin of the one part and Henry Mangum of the County and Parish aforesaid of the other part . . . for and in Consideration of the sum of seven thousand pounds current money of Virginia . . . doth grant bargain sell alien enfeoff and confirm unto the said Henry Mangum . . . one Certain tract or parcel of Land lying and being in the said County of Brunswick Containing by estimation three hundred and seventy one acres . . . Beginning at an ash on Carter's Creek on Masseys line thence along Masseys line to a corner white oak on Solomans line thence along Solomans line to a Corner Hickory on Going's line thence along Going's line to a Corner white oak on William Robinsonson's (sic) line thence along William Robinson's line to a corner pine on Littleberry Robinson's line thence along the said Robinson's line to William Peebles's line thence along Peebles's line to John Collir's (sic) line thence along Collier's line to Massey's line on Carter's Creek thence up the said Creek to the BEGINNING . . . Signed by William Wren and Mary Wren (her mark) and witnessed by Briggs Goodrich, William Robinson, John Camp, and John Woodroof. At a Court held for Brunswick County the 27th Day of March 1780 This Indenture was proved by the oaths of Briggs Goodrich, William Robinson and John Camp Witnesses thereto and Ordered to be recorded. Deed Book 14, page 8.

This Indenture made the eighty Day of November, 1779 BETWEEN George Ledbetter and Elizabeth his wife, William Dale and Sarah his wife of the one part and Henry Mangum of the other part WITNESSETH . . . for and in consideration of the sum of five thousand Pounds current money of Virginia . . . have bargained sold enfeoffed released and confirmed unto the said Henry Mangum . . . on certain tract or parcel of Land situate lying in Brunswick County and on the south side of Fountains Creek containing by Estimation two hundred and seventy five acres be the same more or less with a water grist Mill standing on the above said Creek and the land bounded as follows to wit BEGINNING at the Creek in Nathan Harris's line thence bounded on the said Harrisons line to Henry Mangums own line thence along his line to John Vicks line thence along his line to Pearsons line thence along Pearsons line to a new marked line of the said Pearsons thence along the new marked line down to the Creek thence up the said Creek to the first station taking in the above said Mill together will all woods ways water courses profits commoditus heriditaments and appurtenances thereunto belonging . . . Signed by George Ledbetter, Elizabeth Ledbetter, William Dale (his mark), Sarah Dale (her mark), and witnessed by Absolum Bennett, Briggs Goodrich, Henry Walton, James Pearson, Moses Johnson, William Goodrich, John Camp, William Robinson, and Littleberry Robinson. At a Court held for Brunswick County the 27th day of March 1780 This Indenture was proved by the oaths of Briggs Goodrich Wm Goodrich John Camp and William Robinson Witnesses thereto and Ordered to be recorded. This Indenture made the seventeenth Day of April, 1780 BETWEEN Daniel Gurr of Prince George County of the one part and Thomas Ross of the County of Dinwiddie of the other part WITNESSETH . . . for and in consideration of the sum of three thousand pounds current money . . . hath granted bargained and sold unto the said Thomas Ross one certain tract or parcel of Land in the County of Brunswick containing three hundred and four acres (more or less) lying on wild Catt Creek adjoining the lines of Thomas Brand William Brown and Jones Mchensie, the same tract that formerly belonged to William Gurr decd . . . Signed by Daniel Gurr and witnessed by Lewis Parham, Dixon Hall, John Hardaway Junr. and Robert Moriss. At a Court held for Brunswick County the 24th day of April 1780. This Indenture was proved by the oaths of Lewis Parham John Hardaway Junr. & Robert Moriss witnesses thereto and Ordered to be Recorded. Deed Book 14, page 10.
