THE COMMONWEALTH of Virginia to John Jones, John Edmunds, Thomas Edmunds & Binns Jones Gentlemen greeting WHEREAS William Stith & Katharine his wife of the County of Brunswick and Thomas Stith & Daniel Fisher their certain Indenture of Bargain and Sale bearing Date the 11th Day of July 1785 have sold & conveyed unto Drury Stith the fee simple Estate of five hundred and eighty one acres of Land . . . lying and being in the said County of Brunswick and whereas the said Katharine cannot conveniently travel to our Court . . . to make her acknowledgment . . . therefore we do give unto you or any two or more of you power to receiver the acknowledgment which the said Katharine shall be willing to make . . . and we do therefore command you that do personally go to the said Katharine and receive her acknowledgment of the same . . . 12th Day of July 1785. By Virtue of this Commission to us directed we the Subscribers having privily examined Katharine Stith the wife of the within named William Stith . . . and have received her acknowledgment of the Indenture hereunto annexed . . . under our hands & Seals the 23d Day of July 1785. This Indenture made this Day of June 1785 BETWEEN William Bennett of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Charles Lucas of the same County of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and sixty three pounds . . . doth grant, bargain, sell, alien, release & Confirm unto the said Charles Lucas . . . a Certain Tract of Land situate lying and being in the County of Brunswick aforesaid containing by estimation one hundred and sixty three acres . . . and bounded by the Lands of William Brown, Evan Evans, John Dugger and John Bennett . . . Signed by William Bennett, and witnessed by John H. Briggs, Thos. Stith, John Jones, and William Stith. Brunswick County Court the 25th July 1785. This Indenture was proved by the oaths of John Howell Briggs, Thomas Stith & John Jones witnesses thereto and ordered to be Recorded. Deed Book 14, page 122.

This Indenture made the twentieth day of December 1784 BETWEEN Luke Williams of the County of Richmond of the one part and Thomas Williams of the County of Brunswick of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred & fifty pounds . . . doth fully, clearly & absolutely grant, bargain, sell alien, release, enfeoff & Confirm unto the said Thomas Williams . . . all that Tract or parcel of Land situate lying & being in the County of Brunswick & whereon the said Thomas Williams now lives and being the Land late the property of Hugh Williams decd. and binding on the Lands of Mr. Purdie & Mr. Moses Quarles Senior and containing three hundred and twenty six acres of Land . . . Signed by Luke Williams, and witnessed by Roger Williams, William Wilden (his mark) and Anthoney Doughton (his mark). Deed Book 14, page 123.

THE COMMONWEALTH of Virginia to Thomas Eaton, William Johnson, Philip Hawkins, Young McLemore & Edward Jones Gentlemen of Warren County North Carolina greeting KNOW ye that we trusting to your fidelity & provident circumspection in deligently (sic) examining William Wildin & Anthoney Daughton witnesses to an Indenture of bargain and Sale from Luke Williams of Richmond to Thomas Williams of Brunswick County in Virginia relative to the proof of the said Deed . . . Command you that at such destain Day & place as you shall appoint you agreeable yourselves and the witnesses aforesaid before you, you call and cause to come, and deligently (sic) to examine on the holy Evangelists of Almighty God relative to the premises, and their examinations into our Court of our said County of Brunswick send & certify inclosed sending also to us this Writ witness Drury Stith Clerk of our said Court the 20th Day of July 1785. North Carolina Warren County, By Virtue of the within Writ came before us William Wildin & Anthoney Daughton & made oath on the Holy Evangelists that they saw Luke Williams execute the annexed Deed unto Thomas Williams, sworn before us the 26th July 1785. Signed by William Johnson, Young McLemore, and Edward Jones. Brunswick County Court 28th March 1785. This Indenture was proved by the oath of Roger Williams a witness thereto and on the motion of Thomas Williams one of the parties a Commission is awarded him to examine and take the Depositions of William Wildin & Anthoney Dougton the other two subscribing Witnesses, relating to the proof thereof they being inhabitants of North Carolina directed to Thomas Eaton, William Johnson, Philip Hawkins, Young McLemore & Edward Jones Gentlemen Justices of Warren County in the said State of North Carolina or any two of them, And at a Court held for the said County the 22d of August following the said Depositions were returned & containing full and satisfactory proof of the execution of the said Deed, the said Indenture, together with the Commission & Depositions are admitted to Record. This Indenture made this eleventh day of June 1785 BETWEEN William Briggs, Elizabeth his wife of the County of Brunswick of the one part, and John Haskins of the County aforesaid of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of four hundred pounds . . . by these presents doth give, grant, bargain & Sell unto the said John Haskins . . . One certain tract or parcel of Land lying and being in the County aforesaid and containing by estimation one hundred & eighty acres . . . on the South side of Waqua Creek & bounded as followeth, BEGINNING at an Elm on the said Creek joining the Land of the said John Haskins South to the Great Branch, thence down the Great Branch as it meanders to the said Creek, thence up the said Creek as it meanders to the BEGINNING . . . Signed by William Briggs and Elizabeth Briggs (her mark), and witnessed by John Green, Randolph Rhodes, Milley Patillow (her mark), and William Wright. Brunswick County Court the 22d August 1785 This Indenture was acknowledged by William Briggs a partie thereto and Ordered to be Recorded. Deed Book 14, page 126.

This Indenture made this twenty ninth day of January 1785 BETWEEN Samuel Marshall of the State of North Carolina and County of Warren of the one part and William Marshall of the State of Virginia and County of Brunswick of the other part . . . for & in consideration of the just and full sum of fifty pounds . . . by these presents doth give, grant, bargain, sell, alien, release & confirm to the said William Marshall . . . One Certain tract or parcel of Land situated lying on Meherrin River in the County of Brunswick and bounded as followeth, to wit, BEGINNING at a poplar on the River bank, thence a straight line to a Walnut tree by William Marshall's spring, thence a straight line to the old line where it crosses Northington's spring branch, thence the old line West to Sack Pennington's corner hickory, thence his line to Adkins's corner white oak, thence his line to a white oak on the River bank, down the said River to the first station containing by estimation one hundred acres . . . Signed by Samuel Marshall and witnessed by Jesse Marshall (his mark), Spain Marshall (his mark), Beckey Marshall (her mark), and Sack Pennington. Brunswick County Court the 22d August 1785 This Indenture was proved by the oaths of Jesse Marshall, Spain Marshall & Sack Pennington witnesses thereto & Ordered to be Recorded. This Indenture made this seventh day of December 1784 BETWEEN Joel Biggs and his wife Ann Biggs of the County of Brunswick and David Roper of the said County . . . for and in consideration of the sum of fifty pounds . . . by these presents doth grant, bargain, sell, alien, enfeoff, and absolutely confirm unto the said David Roper . . . a Certain tract or parcel of Land in the County of Brunswick containing by estimation fifty acres . . . BEGINNING at corner gum, thence down the Branch to Hickory run, thence down the run to a corner poplar, thence North by a line of marked Trees between Biggs and the entry to a corner hickory on Benjamin Jones's line, thence along the said Jones's line to the BEGINNING . . . Signed by Joel Biggs and Ann Biggs (her mark), and witnessed by Jeremiah Roper, Moses Quarles, Junr., Thomas Williams, and Christoper Dameron. Brunswick County Court the 22d Augt. 1785 This Indenture was acknowledged by Joel Biggs & Ann his wife parties thereto and Ordered to be Recorded previous to which the said Ann being privately examined as Law directs did Voluntarily assent thereto. Deed Book 14, page 128.

KNOW ALL MEN by these presents that I, William Chapman, of the County of Brunswick and State of Virginia do and did in the month of February 1783, bargain sell and deliver unto James McInvale of the County & State aforesaid one negro wench named Nan together with all her Increase forever For & in consideration of the sum of one hundred & fifty pounds spiecie (sic) to me in hand paid the Receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge and doth agree to warrant & forever defend the said Negro wench Nan and her Increase unto the said James McInvale, . . . In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & Seal this 25th Day of March 1785. Signed by William Chapman and witnessed by John Powell, James Powell, and Edmund Crowder. Brunswick County Court the 22d Augt. 1785 This Instrument of writing was proved by the oaths of John Powell & James Powell witnesses thereto & ordered to be Recorded. Deed Book 14, page 129.

KNOW ALL MEN by these presents that I, William Chapman, of the County of Brunswick have bargained sold and delivered . . . unto Benjamin Johnson . . . one negro woman named Betty for and in consideration of the sum of twenty five pounds to me in hand paid . . . In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & Seal this 27th Day of March 1785. Signed by William Chapman and witnessed by John Powell and James McInvale. Brunswick County Court the 22d Augt. 1785 This Instrument of writing was proved by the oaths of John Powell & James McInvale witnesses thereto & ordered to be Recorded. Deed Book 14, page 130.

This Indenture made this ninth day of August 1785 BETWEEN Samuel Roberts, Thomas Roberts & Mary his wife of the one part & Thomas Edmunds of the other part both of the County of Brunswick . . . for & in consideration of the sum of One hundred & eighty pounds . . . by these presents do grant, bargain, sell and confirm unto the said Thomas Edmunds . . . one certain tract or parcel of Land situate lying & being in the County of Brunswick on Great Creek and bounded by Samuel Roberts's line, Sterling Edmunds's line, Bishops or Whitehead's line, Hardy's line and Thomas Edmunds's line containing two hundred acres . . . Signed by Samuel Roberts, Thomas Roberts, and Mary Roberts, and witnessed by Wynn Malone, Samuel Hudgeon (his mark), and William D. Orgain. Brunswick County Court the 22d August 1785. This Indenture was acknowledged by Samuel Roberts, Thomas Roberts and Mary the wife of the said Thomas to be their act & Deed and Ordered to be Recorded. Previous to which the said Mary being privately examined as the Law directs did Voluntarily assent thereto. Deed Book 14, page 130.
