This Indenture made this twenty sixty day of September 1785 BETWEEN Lewis Lanier & Ann his wife of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Charles King of the same County of the other part . . . for and in Consideration of the sum of one hundred & forty five pounds specie . . . hath sold bargained and confirm unto the said Charles King in fee simple a tract or parcel of Land lying and being in the County of Brunswick containing one hundred & thirty one acres . . . & bounded as follows, to wit, BEGINNING at the Fishing hole on Crablouse Run at a corner white Oak, thence up the said Run to the Grassy Branch, thence up the said Branch to a corner on Buckner Lanier's line, thence along his line to John Birdsong's line thence along his line to the Corner Hickory on the path, thence along Birdsongs line still to Houses's line at a corner oak, thence along his line to the corner on Avery's line, thence along his line to a corner white oak on Nathaniel Gregory's line, thence along his line as the fence runs stearing (sic) to the BEGINNING . . . Signed by Lewis Lanier and Ann Lanier, and witnessed by William Cely, Joshua Lucy, and Peter Ivie. Brunswick County Court the 26th of September 1785. This Indenture was acknowledged by Lewis Lanier & Ann his wife parties thereto & ordered to be recorded previous to which the said Ann being privately examined as the Law directs did Voluntarily assent thereto. KNOW ALL by these presents that I, John Miscul of Brunswick County for and in consideration of the sum eighty pounds . . . to me in hand paid . . . and by these presents do bargain, sell & deliver unto Robert Turnbull . . . on negroe (sic) Peter . . . witness my hand and Seal this 28th day of March 1785. Signed by John Miscul and witnessed by Patk. Walker and John Allen. Brunswick County Court the 26th Septemr. 1785. This Instrument of writing was acknowledged by John Miscul to be his Act & Deed & Ordered to be Recorded. Deed Book 14, page 133.
This Indenture made this twenty seventh day of June 1785 BETWEEN Benjamin Hagood of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Drury Lanier of the same County of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the just quantity of three thousand pounds of Neat Inspected Tobacco . . . by these presents doth grant, Bargain & Sell unto the said Drury Lanier . . . all that certain tract or parcel of Land whereon he the said Benjamin Hagood now liveth situate lying and being on the North side Meherrin River in the aforesaid County of Brunswick containing one hundred and sixty nine Acres . . . and is bounded by the lines of Colonal John Jones, Henryetta Wilkes, Lewis Collier & Randle Hagood . . . PROVIDED always and the true intent and meaning of this present writing is such that if the said Benjamin Hagood . . . do and shall well & truly pay or cause to be paid unto the said Drury Lanier . . . the aforesaid quantity of three thousand pounds of Tobacco, with Lawful Interest thereupon from the twenty fifth day of December which was in the year one thousand seven hundred and eighty three, on or before the twenty fifth day of December next, as also the Costs attending the Recording this writing, then this writing and every thing herein contained is to become void & of non effect. But if the said Benjamin Hagood . . . shall fail to make payment as aforesaid then it shall and may be Lawful for him the said Drury Lanier . . . to make sale of the said Land in a public manner for ready Tobacco and out of the Sales thereof to satisfy & pay the aforesaid three thousand pounds of Tobacco and Interest as aforesaid as also the Costs attending the Recording this writing as well as any other or further Costs that may hereafter arise . . . TO ALL PEOPLE to whom this present writing shall come I, Thomas Washington of Brunswick County for the love & respect I bear to my Sister Mary Washington I give grant & dispose in plain & open markett (sic) the following negroes to her & her heirs forever (Viz.) Ben, Abigal, Silva, Cato, Sally, Nancey, Sarah, Tom, Bird & Sampson . . . to use and dispose at her & their will & pleasure as of her & their own property without any manner of challenge, claim or demand of me the said Thomas Washington . . . I have hereunto set my hand & Seal this 23d Day of July, in the year of our Lord 1785. Signed by Thomas Washington and witnessed by Howell Lashley, Robert Crow and Miles Alley. TO ALL PEOPLE to whom this present writing shall come I, Thomas Washington of Brunswick County for the love & respect I bear to my brother Gray Washington I give grant and dispose in plain & open markett (sic) all that Tract & parcel of Land & premises lying and being in the County of Brunswick on the Waters of Pea hill Creek adjoining the Lands of James Read, Hartwell Marrable, Betsy Jones the wife of Sugar Jones which was called Chinch's Land, and the Lands of William Holloway & then bounded by Pea hill Creek opposite to the Lands of William Huskey, William Jones, James Fletcher & Colonal (sic) William Brown containing by estimation four hundred & fourteen acres be the same more or less. Also the following Negroes (Viz.) Jacob, Tab, Marindy, David, Fanny, Randle, Cheketer, Daniel, Simon, Isaac, Iris . . . do use and dispose at his and their will & pleasure, as of his & their own property whithout (sic) any manner of challenge, claim or demand of me the said Thomas Washington . . . This Indenture made this twentieth day of October 1785 BETWEEN Abraham Botton (Bottom) and Elizabeth his wife of the County of Brunswick Virginia of the one part & Jeremiah Bently of the County of Amelia of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum of forty pounds . . . have bargained and sold and by these presents one certain tract or parcel of Land situate lying and being in the County of Brunswick containing by estimation fifty acres . . . & bounded as followeth BEGINNING at the mouth of the Rockey Run, Thence up the said Run the various water course to Thomas Pinner's line, Thence along the said Pinner's line of marked trees to a corner pine on Thomas Steven's line, Thence along the said Steven's line of marked trees to Fountain's Creek, Thence down the said Creek the Various watercourse to the BEGINNING Run it being the same Land that Abraham Bottom bought of William Sucale & the said Sucale (or Sucate) of David Stokes . . . Signed by Abraham Botton (his mark) and Elisabeth Botton (her mark). Brunswick County Court the 24th Day of October 1785. This Indenture was acknowledged by Abraham Botton & Elisabeth his wife parties thereto and Ordered to be Recorded previous to which the said Elizabeth being privately examined as the Law directs did Voluntarily assent thereto. THE COMMONWEALTH of Virginia To John Flood Edmunds and Thomas Edmunds Gentleman greeting WHEREAS William Cocke and Rebecca his wife by their certain Indenture of Bargain & Sale bearing date the 21st Day of February 1782 have sold and conveyed to Isham Trotter of the said County the fee simple Estate of and in four hundred and twenty Acres of Land lying and being in the said County of Brunswick and parish of Saint Andrews and whereas the said Rebecca cannot conveniently travel to our Court . . . to make acknowledgment of the said Conveyance therefore we do give unto you or any two or more of you power to receive the acknowledgment which the said Rebecca shall be willing to give before you of the conveyance aforesaid contained in the said Indenture which is hereunto annexed and we do therefore command you that you do personally go to the said Rebecca & Receive her acknowledgment . . . at the Courthouse the 23d day of June 1785. Signed Drury Stith. Pursuant to the within Commission to us directed we the subscribers did personally go to the within named Rebecca wife to the within named William Cocke & examine her privately and apart from her said Husband . . .given under our hands & Seals this 28th Day of June 1785.
