Steger Family Cemetery (Joseph McClaurine Steger line) John Wesley Steger Decendants Cemetery location: Buckingham - From Rt.627 turn onto state route 698 follow until where Rt. 777 enters Rt698 continue on Rt698 about 50 yards on left you will see fenced in cemetery is located in the center of field. The cemetery is designated on most county maps. DATE: 1912 is oldest grave marker. also, contains members of the Baber and Snoddy families. OWNERS: Charles W. Steger, Jr. and Keith G. Steger, fourth generation owners of homestead originally purchased by John Wesley Steger upon return from Civil War. DESCRIPTION: The cemetery is located in a currently maintained hay field and is enclosed by a chain link fence. Cemetery is bounded by two walnut trees with a Crepe Myrtle within and is maintained on a constant basis. Two gravestones have lost their markings with age and may soon be replaced. There are 2 or more known graves without headstones. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: John Wesley Steger was a Civil War veteran who was disabled at the age of 22 As a result of being shot in the leg while rendering air to a wounded soldier in the Battle of Gaines Mill outside Richmond. He served in Company “D” of the 56th Regiment from Buckingham, Virginia.
