Our History

Chantilly Chapter was organized January 20, 1971, at Historic Nomini Episcopal Church, Westmoreland County, Virginia.  Virginia W. Sherman (Mrs. John) was the organizing regent.  The chapter serves Westmoreland and Richmond counties.

Chantilly Chapter is named for the Colonial plantation and manor house of Colonel Richard Henry Lee, who was born at Stratford Hall in Westmoreland County, Virginia, on January 20, 1732.  Chantilly plantation was originally a part of the Stratford Hall plantation established by Thomas Lee, the father of Richard Henry Lee.

Thomas Lee Shippen, when describing his visit to Westmoreland, wrote his father that Chantilly “commands a much finer view than Stratford by reason of a large bay into which the Potomac forms itself opposite.”

The articles of the Leedstown Resolves protesting the Stamp Act were prepared and offered by Richard Henry Lee and passed on February 27, 1766.  Colonel Lee was a delegate to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia and introduced the resolution calling for Independence from England on June 7, 1776.
