Fredericksburg was founded in 1728 on the banks of the Rappahannock River in Spotsylvania County which was formed from Essex, King & Queen and King William Counties in 1721. Fredericksburg was incorporated as an independent town in 1782 but remained a part of Spotsylvania County for certain administrative purposes until the town was incorporated as a city in 1887 at which time it became entirerly independent of Spotsylvania County. Surviving Court records, dating from 1782, are located at the Fredericksburg Circuit Court with the following exceptions :
