The City of Chesapeake was founded January 1, 1963, through the merger of the areas known as Norfolk County and the City of South Norfolk, Virginia. In its heart is the community of Great Bridge, where the first land battle of the Revolutionary War in Virginia took place on December 9th, 1775. Due to the Patriots' momentous victory at the Battle of Great Bridge, Lord Dunmore and his troops were chased from Norfolk and the port of Norfolk secured. The Great Bridge Waterways and History Foundation is working to establish a visitors center and museum at the site of the Battle of Great Bridge. On March 20, 2006, the Virginia Daughters erected a monument in memory of patriots who fought in the battle.
