Looney & Caldwell Deed
This deed made and entered into this
24th day of July 1878, between Joseph
Looney and Melvinia his wife of the
first part, and John M. Caldwell of
the second part all of the County of Craig
and State of Virginia, witnesseth:
that for and in consideration of the sum of
One hundred and Eighteen dollars cash
in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby
acknowledged, the said Joseph Looney
and Melvina his wife do grant bargain
and sell unto the said John M. Caldwell
with covenants of general warranty, a
certain tract, piece or parcel of land of
land [sic] lying on Johns Creek in Craig County
Virginia and adjoins the lands of said
John M. Caldwell which he recently
purchased from Thomas E. Martin and
wife, the said land hereby intended to be
conveyed all that part of Joseph
Looney's land which lies between the
2 fords of Johns Creek South west of
and next to the residence of the said
Joseph Looney, and is bounded as follows
to wit: Beginning on the south side of
Johns Creek in 2 Sycamores near the
creek thence S 74 W 67 poles to a pine and
chestnut oak near the creek thence 83 W 78
poles up the creek to a double chestnut
oak and black oak near the creek S 77 E 18
poles to a chestnut oak near a deep hollow
N 33 E 22 poles to a white oak and pine
N 78 E 52 poles to 3 white oaks in a hollow
N 9 W 81 poles to the Beginning.
The said Joseph Looney and Melvina his
wife covenant that they had the
right to convey the said lands to the grantee;
that they have done no act to encumber
the said land; that the grantee shall
have quiet posession of the said land
free from all encumbrances; and that they
the said parties of the first part, will
execute such further assurances of the
said land as may be requisite.
