My name is Mary Kathryn Kozy and I am the webmaster responsible for the Culpeper VAGenWeb Pages. I would like to thank Donna Allen for the work she has done on the page in the past! My interest in Culpeper County stems from my father's family, who lived in the county in the early 1800s. I look forward to being able to help Culpeper County researchers, and hope you enjoy the site! |
| Culpeper County was formed from Orange County, by an act of the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1748. This became effective in 1749 when the first county court convened. The original territory included what is now Culpeper, Madison, and Rappahannock Counties. The county was named for Lord Thomas Culpeper who served as the Colonial Governor of Virginia from 1680-1683. Lord Culpeper's father, Lord John Culpeper, was granted over 5.2 million acres of land in the Northern Neck of Virginia, which passed to his son. Lord Thomas then passed this land on to his daughter Catherine, who married Lord Thomas Fairfax. These lands were then always referred to as the "Fairfax Proprietary." Lands were granted in this area from 1690 until 1808 when the last surviving Fairfax heir sold his interest. Interestingly, a teenaged George Washington was hired by Lord Fairfax as a surveyor of his own lands, and in July 1749, Washington was commissioned as surveyor for the newly formed Culpeper County. |
