CHAPTER TWELVE

Matthias and Jean/Jane Williams

Matthias1 was probably born c1727, place unknown;  died before 23 Oct. 1780, when his will was probated in Cumberland Co., VA.1  He named wife Jean/Jane and many children, apparently listed in birth order.  Nothing further is known about daughter Elizabeth.  Jean/Jane died after Aug 1806, based on a letter written by Susannah Williams to her niece, Henrietta Williams, daughter of William and Judith Saunders Williams in August 1806.2  In it, Susannah mentioned having spoken with cousin Reuben Williams, sent her love to Henrietta and mentioned that Sarah and Grandmother also send their love to her.  She also identified herself as Henrietta’s aunt.  Jean/Jane may be the Jennie Williams listed in the 1810 census of Buckingham Co., VA, in which the oldest female household member was over 45.  This Jennie Williams lived only a few doors from Henry and Keziah Williams DeShazer’s home.3

Children:

i. Sarah, probably born c1751, based on naming order in Matthias’s will, probably born in Cumberland Co., VA; died after Aug 1806; apparently unmarried.
ii. Elizabeth, probably  born c1753, probably in Cumberland Co., VA; died after 1788.
iii. Matthias, born 14 Nov 1755, Cumberland Co., VA; died after 1840, probably in Morgan Co., TN. He was a Revolutionary War pensioner4 and apparently married Sarah Butler, daughter of Aaron Butler, c1776.  On 22 Sept 1776, Matthias (probably Sr.)  sold a tract of land with Aaron Butler in Cumberland Co.5  Aaron’s will was dated 13 Oct 1776 and probated 24 Mar 1777, with Matthias Williams as a witness and daughter, Sarah Williams, named as an heir.6 Butler descendants have speculated that Aaron Butler’s wife, Susannah, was a Williams.  Thus, she may have been a sister of Matthias Sr.
iv. Thomas, born c1759, probably Cumberland Co., VA; died c1783; married Esther Morrow, 6 Aug 1780, Prince Edward Co., VA with Roger Williams, surety.  Thomas’ will was probated in Cumberland Co, with brother John as executor.  Wife Esther was named, but no children.7
v. Keziah, born c1760, probably in Cumberland Co., VA; died probably before 1810; married Henry DeShazer, 25 Dec 1788, Cumberland Co.  Henry was a Revolutionary War pensioner.8
vi. John, born 30 June 1761, Cumberland Co., VA; died after 1855, probably in Anderson Co., TN.  He was a Revolutionary War pensioner9; married Unknown, c1782, probably in VA.
vii. Susannah, probably born c1763 (born 1760-1770 per 1830 census); died before 22 Jan 1838, Cumberland Co., VA. This Susannah appears to be the same as in the 182010 and 183011 census records of Cumberland Co.  Ewing Morrow was curator of her estate.12  He appears in the land deed index as an attorney.  He was also overseer of the poor at the time Susannah died.  Susannah's estate was credited with $57 for the care of Betty Sammons, who is most likely the second elderly female enumerated in Susannah's household.  Her estate was worth $149; debts totaled $139 with $10 to the curator, leaving no balance to be disbursed.  No heirs were named in the court papers.
viii. William, born c1765, probably in Cumberland Co., VA; died between 1830-40, probably Marion Co., TN; married Judith Saunders before 12 Nov. 1788, Cumberland Co., VA.  She was born c1765, VA; died between 1850-60, probably Marion Co., TN.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

The Descendants of Matthias and Jean/Jane Williams

Matthias2 (Matthias1) was born 14 Nov 1755, Cumberland Co., VA1; died after the 1840 census, probably in Morgan Co., TN2; probably married Sarah Butler, daughter of Aaron Butler, c1776, probably in Cumberland Co.  In the spring of 1776, Matthias (probably Sr.) sold a tract of land with Aaron Butler in Cumberland Co.3  In the fall of 1776, Aaron’s will was written and probated in Cumberland Co. with Matthias Williams as a witness and Aaron’s daughter, Sarah Williams, named as an heir.4  It is possible that Aaron Butler's wife was Susannah Williams.  Aaron Butler was born c1725 and died 1777, Cumberland Co., VA.  This Susannah may have been a sister of Thomas (born 1712) and Matthias Sr. and the land transaction of 1776 may have involved Matthias Sr.  More research needs to be done on this relationship.

Children:

i. Susannah, born c1778, VA; died after 1850, probably Cole Co., MO; married John Landrum, 9 Jan 1796, Campbell Co., VA.  The marriage record identifies Susannah as the daughter of Matthias.  In Apr 1801, “Thias” Williams and John Landrum appear in Cumberland Co., VA court orders as plaintiffs in case against Henry Skipwith.  Nothing further was found on this suit.5  A John Landrum appears in Anderson Co., TN court records from 1805-1814.6  From circumstantial evidence, it appears that this John is the same man who married Susannah Williams.
ii. ?Child, born c1780.  The 1782 and 1784 tax lists7 of white souls include enough people to account for two parents and 3 and 4 children, respectively.  However, this child is speculation - there may have been another family member living with them at the time.
iii. Polly, born c1782; died before 13 Mar 1844, probably Pittsylvania Co., where there is an estate administration for Pleasant and Polly from 1842-18458; married Pleasant Mahone, 20 Feb 1802, Campbell Co., VA.  He was born c1780; died before 20 Mar 1842, Pittsylvania, VA.
iv. Thomas, born c1784; left a will that was probated in Roane Co., TN on 18 July 18149; married Charlotte Rector, daughter of Martin Rector, c1809, possibly Anderson Co., TN.
v. Matthias, born c1789, VA; died after 1860; married Sally Rector, daughter of Martin Rector.
vi. John, born c1791; died by Oct 1815, when the administration of his estate was noted in Roane Co. court records.10  When Thomas Williams, (iii., above) named his executors, he named Matthias Sr. and John.  It is assumed that he named his father and brother.  Chancery Court records for 18 Oct 1815 name Matthias Williams administrator of the estate of John Williams, deceased.  If John was married, there is no record to indicate the identity of spouse or children.
vii. ?Martha, born October 1797, VA; died 8 Dec 1884, Clark Co., MS;  married Moses Shoemaker, 28 Dec 1814, Roane Co., TN. He was born 27 Apr 1795, Pulaski, Giles Co., TN; died 22 Sept 1876, Silas, Choctaw Co., AL.
viii. ?William H., born 10 Mar 1803, VA; died 1 May 1883, probably Morgan Co., TN;  married (1) Unknown (2) Sarah, said to be Sarah Elizabeth Patterson.

Keziah2 (Matthias1) was born c1760; married Henry DeShazer, 25 Dec 1788, Cumberland Co., VA. Little is known about this couple.  Henry's father has never been identified, although he named a son Abraham and an Abraham is found on a tax list in Cumberland Co. in 1784.  In 1810, Henry was living in Buckingham Co., VA.11  The household configuration at that time was one male over 45 (Henry), one male 16-26, 2 males under 10, one female 16-26, and one female under 10.  It appears that Keziah died before 1810, possibly by 1806, with Henry remarrying c1807.  Since she was born c1760, it also appears that she might not be the mother of all three children under 10.  By 1820, there was one male over 45, 2 males 10-16, 2 males under 10, a female 26-45, one female 16-26 and one female 10-16. Henry appears to have married at least one more time.  Henry's Revolutionary War pension application gives most of the information known about this man.12  About 1817, Henry left VA for KY, first settling in Lincoln Co. and then, before 1830, in Mercer Co.  It is doubtful whether Keziah is the mother of any of the younger children listed in the 1810 census. Children who most likely are not Keziah's include William, b. c1808, VA; married (1) Rebecca Cloyd, 2 Oct 1828, Lincoln Co., KY; (2) Susan Devine, 22 Oct 1841, Mercer Co., KY; Jane, born c1810; married (1) John Cloyd, 17 Jan 1827, Lincoln Co., KY (2) John Leonard, 14 July 1836, Merrcer Co., KY; Jesse, born 11 Sept 1811, VA; died 28 Apr 1885, Mercer Co.; married Ann Gabhard, 16 Jan 1840, Mercer Co.; and James, born c1816, VA; married Sarah May, c1842.  Henry died in August 1843, in Mercer Co., KY, where his estate was adminstered.13 Heirs included spouse Elizabeth and the following children:  Abraham, John W., Nancy Ann, William, Jane, Jesse and James.  Elizabeth, probably born c1784-90, did not survive long past her husband, as her estate sale was recorded in Jan 1845, Mercer Co., KY.14  Permelia may have been a daughter of Keziah, but William, Jane, Jesse and James were almost certainly not Keziah's children.  Even if Permelia was Keziah’s daughter, she predeceased her father, Henry, and, as no Hazelwood heirs were listed in her right, it appears that she left no children who lived to inherit from their grandfather.

Children: (DeShazer)

i. Abraham (Is he the male, born c1784-94; died after Aug 1843, as he was an heir of his father?) Apparently not in Henry's household in 1820.
ii. Nancy Ann, born c1789; married Richard Holt, 6 Oct 1806, Prince Edward Co., VA; bond states she is the daughter of Henry Deshazer.
iii. Female, born c1784-94; died after 1810, but before August 1843.  (Is this Permelia, below, or is this another daughter who died young?)
iv. John W., born c1793, Amelia Co., VA; died 17 June 1862, Charlotte Co., VA, aged 69 years; married Sally A. Middleton, 5 Nov 1823, Charlotte Co., VA; bondsman was John Middleton.  Parents named on death record as Henry and K. DeShazer.  Sally was born c1800, Charlotte Co., VA and survived him.
v. Permelia, born 1794-1804; died before Aug 1843; married John Hazelwood, 6 Jan 1827, Lincoln Co., KY; Henry giving consent.  Permelia may not be a daughter of Keziah.

John2 (Matthias1) was born 30 June 1761, Cumberland Co., VA; died after 1855, probably Anderson Co., TN, where he filed for a bounty land grant, according to his Revolutionary War pension application.15  However, like brother Matthias and brother-in-law Henry DeShazer, John gave no family information in his record.  In looking at the 1830,16 184017 and 185018 censuses, it appears that John married (1) Unknown, c1782, probably in  VA.  His wife was born 1750-1760, but probably closer to 1760, as John was born 1761; died probably between 1830-40, probably in  Morgan Co., TN.

Children:

i. Elizabeth, born c1784, VA; died after 1870, probably  Morgan Co., TN19; apparently unmarried, but was the mother of Mary who married Ezra Russell, probably in Anderson, TN.20
ii. ?Nancy, born 1780-1790; died after 1830; married Joseph McPherson, 4 Aug 1816, Roane Co., TN; John Williams was the bondsman.  The McPhersons had ties by marriage to the Rectors, who, in turn, had ties to the Williamses by marriage.  The families obviously knew each other.  If John Williams, the bondsman, was Nancy's father, then John the pensioner is the only John in the county old enough to be her father.  John’s probable son, John Jr., would also have been of age to be the bondsman.
iii. ?John, born c1791, VA; died after 1860; married (1) Elizabeth Duncan, born c1790; died c1852. (2) Amy Harbin Crenshaw, mother of his daughter-in-law, Eliza Jane Crenshaw.  However, it also appears that John had at least two illegitimate children, one daughter by Joasy Farmer and a son by Aza Morgan.
iv. ?Judah, born c1796, VA; d. after 1860, possibly in Anderson Co., TN; married Humphrey Thacker, 2 Jan 1832, Roane Co., TN.  Humphrey was born c1791, VA; died after 1860, possibly in Anderson Co., TN. Benjamin Thacker lived next door to John Williams in 1830, so it is possible that this Judah is a daughter of John.  John had a daughter in Judah’s age range in 1830.
v. Susannah,19 born c1805, TN; died after 1870, probably in Anderson Co., TN; married John Russell, c1828, probably in Anderson or Morgan Co., TN.

William2 (Matthias1) was born c1760-65, probably in  Cumberland Co., VA; died between 1830-40, probably in  Marion Co., TN21; married Judith Saunders before 12 Nov 1788, Cumberland Co.  Their marriage bond is only dated by the name of the governor, fixing the date as noted above.  Judith was born c1765, VA, but her parents have not been identified.  Judith survived him and was living in Marion Co. in 1850 with her daughter, Nancy22.  She apparently died before 1870.  William bought land in Marion Co. in 1825.24  Shiloh Church minutes in Roane Co. show that the petition of a William Williams for a letter of dismission on 26 Mar 1825 was granted23.  The church record probably refers to this William, as it coincides with his land purchase in Marion Co.

Children:25

i. Henrietta, born 3 Oct 1789; died before 15 Dec 1836; married Matthew Pryor, 22 Sept 1808, Roane Co., TN.  He was born 8 Feb 1787, NC, died 12 June 1869 at Red Hill, near Whitwell, Marion, TN.
ii. Sarah, born 12 Feb 1790, VA; died after 1870, probably in Texas Co., MO; married William Pryor, c1808, possibly in Anderson Co., TN.  William was born c1785, NC; died after 1870, probably in Texas Co., MO.  This family removed to Texas and Webster Cos., MO. William was the brother of John Henry and Matthew Pryor, who also married Williams sisters.
iii. Sterling, born 27 Oct 1792, VA; died after 1860, probably in Hot Spring Co., AR; married Polly Cobb, 20 July 1821, Roane Co., TN.
iv. Elizabeth, born 1 Dec 1794.  No other information.
v. Harriet, born 18 Dec 1796, VA; died May 1868, Marion Co.; married John Henry Pryor, 1 Aug 1817, Roane Co., TN.  He was born c1796;  died 1844.
vi. John, born 13 Dec 1798, probably Cumberland Co., VA; died 9 July 1862, Hot Spring Co., AR; married Lucy Ann Moore, c1825, probably Marion Co., TN.  She was born 22 July 1808; died 12 May 1869, Hot Spring Co., AR.  She was possibly the daughter of John Moore who lived next door to John Williams in Marion Co., TN in 1830.  Both John and Lucy are buried at Lono Cemetery, Hot Spring Co., AR.
vii. Paul M. , born 23 Aug 1801; died 1830-40, possibly in  Marion Co., TN.  He apparently married (1) Mary Davis who married (2) Noah Stonecipher.
viii. Matthias, born 13 Dec 1803, VA; died after 1880 and likely is the pauper “Mt. Williams” who died in Roane Co., TN, buried 4 Dec 1884; married (1) Rebecca Davison, 21 Nov 1825, Roane Co., TN (2) Millie A.E. Shackelford, a widow, 30 Aug 1855, Roane Co., TN. Millie apparently died soon or else they divorced (3) Elizabeth, married c1865, possibly Morgan Co., TN.  She was born c1835, TN; died after 1880.
ix. Nancy, born 17 Dec 1806, TN; died after 1870, probably in Marion Co., TN; apparently unmarried but had at least one daughter, probably two.
x. William Alexander, born 15 Jan 1808, TN; died 12 Dec 1866, probably Lafayette Co., AR; married Hepsabeth Davidson, perhaps a sister of Rebecca Davison, who married his brother, Matthias, on 9 Oct 1828, probably in Marion Co., TN.
xi. Mary, born 24 Feb 1810, TN; died 22 Nov 1891, probably Marion Co., TN; married Matthew Pryor, widower of her sister, Henrietta, 15 Dec 1836, probably in Marion Co., TN.

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

The Descendants of Matthias and Jean/Jane Williams

Susannah3 (Matthias2, Matthias1) was born c1778, VA; died after 1850,1 probably Cole Co., MO; married John Landrum, 9 Jan 1796, Campbell Co., VA.  The marriage record identifies Susannah as the daughter of Matthias. John was probably born c1775; died after 1822 and before 8 Aug 1833. This couple appears to have migrated to eastern Tennessee with the Williamses, but Susannah apparently moved on as a widow to Cole Co., MO by 1833.2  In Apr 1801, “Thias” Williams and John Landrum appear in Cumberland Co., VA court orders as plaintiffs against Henry Skipwith.3  Nothing further has been found on this suit.  John Landrum appears in Anderson Co., TN court records from 1805-1814, mostly as a juror.4  Several of the Williams clan lived in Anderson Co. at the time.  Son William’s War of 1812 pension file contains the information that he was born in Campbell Co., VA.  Since John and Susannah were newlyweds living there from 1796 to 1803, and William enlisted in Roane Co., TN in 1814, it seems likely that John and Susannah were his parents.  Also, John was named as father and heir to Thomas’s War of 1812 land grant in Cross Co., AR in 1822.5  William’s bounty land was next door in Poinsett Co., AR. There is a John Landrum who lived near this family.  He was born 1796, KY, according to the 1850 census.  However, the Landrum name is unusual in the area of Cole Co. and it is possible that John’s age was off  by a few years and his birthplace might also be in error.  If he was, in fact, born in 1796 in KY, then he could not be a child of John and Susannah.  However, if the data is incorrect, he may be the second or third child born to this couple.  More research is needed on this man.  In addition, John Sr.’s date of death is unknown.  No evidence has been found indicating whether he died in Anderson Co., TN or if the family had moved elsewhere before he died.  If he died before 1830, Susannah must have been living with an unknown child.  She may have been living with the same unidentified child in 1840 because no female in her age range was in the household of the McDaniels, McKinneys or Landrums.

 Children:  (Landrum)

i. William, born 18 Feb 1797, Campbell Co.,VA; died 23 Oct 1855, MO; married Polly Mulkey, 5 Jan 1822, Cole Co., MO.  She was the daughter of John and Polly (Lewis) Mulkey, born 6 Aug 1794, TN; died 20 Feb 1853, probably Miller Co., MO.
ii. Thomas, born c1799; died May 1815, during War of 1812 service.
iii. Henrietta, born c1808, TN; died after 1860, probably Cole Co., MO; married Martin or Maston McDaniel, 8 Aug 1833, Cole Co., MO.  Martin was born 1780-1790 and apparently died after the 1850 census.
iv. Joshua, born c1809, TN; died after 1850, unless he was misrecorded as John D. Landrum in 1860.  He apparently married in the 1830’s, as there was a female in his household 20-30 years old in 1840.6  However, he has no wife or children living with him in 1850, or 1860 if he is John D.
v. Judith, born c1818, TN; died between 1850-60, probably Cole Co., MO; married John McKinney, 9 Jan 1834, Cole Co., MO.  John was born c1808, TN; died after 1870, possibly Cole Co., MO.

Polly3 (Matthias2, Matthias1) was born c1782; died before 13 Mar 1844, when Edmund was appointed administrator of her estate, valued at $244.887; married Pleasant Mahone, 20 Feb 1802, Campbell Co., VA.  Pleasant died in Pittsylvania Co., VA before 20 Mar 1842, when Edmund Mahon was appointed adminstrator or his estate.2  Securities were John Bullington, Doctor Harris and William B. Millner. Widow Polly did not want to serve. Pleasant's estate was valued at $4,067.12, including 9 slaves.  Spelling of the surname is found as Mahan, Mahon and Mahone.

 Children: (Mahone)8

i. Edmund, born c1802, VA; died 1875, Henry Co., VA; married Polly Casey, 29 Jan 1828, Henry Co., VA.  Polly was born c1810, VA; died after 1880; she was the daughter of Martha Casey, who consented to the marriage.
ii. Sarah, born c1804; married Josiah Bullington, 2 Dec 1822, Pittsylvania Co.; bondsman was Pleasant Mahon.
iii. Shepherd, born 11 Mar 1807, VA; died 5 Sept 1843, probably Osage, MO; married Nancy Griggs, 9 Dec 1832, Pittsylvania Co.  Bondsman was George W. Robertson.  Nancy Mahon married (2) Abraham Creider, 8 Nov 1845, Osage Co., MO. She was born 22 Mar 1807, VA; died 17 Aug 1863, probably Osage, MO; Nancy and Shepherd are both buried at Pilot Knob Baptist Cemetery on the Osage Co. line near Belle, Maries, MO.
iv. Nancy, born c1814; married John Garrett, 30 Feb 1830, Pittsylvania Co.; bondsman was Pleasant Mahon.  They were married by Rev. William Blair. The 1830 Pittsylvania Co., VA census shows John Garrett as 00001-00001.  He was gone by 1840.
v. Elizabeth, born 8 May c1816; died 4 Jan 1858, Fayette Co., IL; married Pliant Mahon, 24 Jan 1834, Pittsylvania Co., VA.
vi. Wesley, born c1818; died 28 Feb 1885, Fayette Co., IL; married Mary Godsey, 27 Feb 1839, Pittsylvania Co.;  she was the daughter of William and Frances Godsey.
vii. Reuben, born c1820; married Virginia E. Harris, about 13 Dec 1845, the date of the bond; , Pittsylvania Co., VA; marriage was by Rev. Joseph Eanes.
viii. Williamson, born c1822; died after 1850; married Martha A., c1844.
ix. Mary, born c1824.
x. Jeduthan, born 22 Dec c1826, VA; died 1 Sept 1900, Fayette Co., IL; married Ruth Hoover, 6 Nov 1850, Fayette Co., IL.
xi. Julia, born c1827, Pittsylvania Co., VA; died 8 Mar 1881 of pneumonia, Henry Co., VA; married Stephen L. Martin, 19 Oct 1846, Pittsylvania Co., VA; Jesse Strange was her guardian and Reuben Mahon was surety; married by Rev. Joseph Eanes.

Thomas3 (Matthias2, Matthias1) was born c1784, probably VA.  He died before 18 July 1814, Roane Co., when his will was probated.9 The will named his wife, Charlotte, and two young daughters.  He apparently married Charlotte Rector, daughter of Martin Rector, c1809.  Widow Charlotte Williams was living next door to David Summers in 183010 and apparently married him between the 1830 census and 1833.  Martin Rector died 11 Mar 1832 and one of his heirs named in court in Dec 1833 was Charlotte Summers, wife of David.11  The 1830 census12 shows Charlotte Williams to be head of a household which included herself, a female 15-19 years old (probably Betty) along with a male 5-9 years old and a female 0-5 years old.  These last two children were apparently children she had with Martin Melton, who was ordered to pay child support in two separate court records.13  It is possible that the boy was Martin Williams who married Rebecca Stonecipher, removed to Marion Co., IL and then disappeared before the 1850 census.  It was originally thought he was the son of Matthias Williams, born 1789.  If his father was actually Martin Melton, then he is not a Williams at all.  Rebecca’s children in 1850 were James, born c1842, Charlotte, born c1844, and Asway, born c1845.  In 1860, Rebecca had two other children living with her.  Peter was born c1852, TN and William, was born c1854, also in TN. This Martin appears to be the same man who married Mary M. Pittman in Roane County on 23 Oct 1848.  This couple lived in Knox County in 1850 and were back in Roane County by 1860.  On April 28, 1869, the Roane County Circuit Court dismissed Mary’s request for a divorce from Martin.  However, by 1880, a Martin Williams with an age matching Charlotte’s son was living in Loudon County with daughter-in-law Nan E., and 2 girls identified as his daughters.  They were aged 4 and 5/12 months.

iii. Daughter, born c1818, died after 1830.
iv. ?Thomas, born c1819, TN, died after 1860, married Recta, c1844.  Thomas is not a proven son of Matthias.  However, William H. had a dau named Recta, an unusual name also held by Thomas’ wife.  Matthias had a male in this age range in his household in the 1830 census.  Naming this son Thomas would coincide with the death of Matthias’ brother in 1814.

vii. ?Martha, born c1827, TN; shortly before 7 Mar 1910, Rhea Co., TN; married Horace M. Smith, 30 Jan 1845, Rhea Co., TN. viii. Elizabeth, born 17 Feb 1829, Atlanta, DeKalb, GA; died 1892, Centropolis, Franklin, KS; married (1) Henry Minnick, either 23 Dec 1844 or 2 June 1845.  Curiously, both dates are recorded in Rhea Co., TN (2) Lewis D. Mott, 23 Sept 1877, Centropolis, Franklin, KS.
ix. Daughter, born c1834; died after 1840.
x. Daughter, born c1838; died after 1840.

Martha3 (Matthias2, Matthias1) was born  Oct 1797, probably Campbell Co., VA; died 8 Dec 1884, reportedly in Clarke Co., MS; buried Springbank Baptist Cemetery, Choctaw Co., AL.16  She is not a proven child of Matthias, but as she named a son Matthias, it appears likely that she was a daughter of Matthias, the Revolutionary War pensioner.  She died 8 Dec 1884, Clarke, MS,17 but was buried in Springbank Baptist Cemetery back in Choctaw Co., AL; married Moses Cavitte Shoemaker, 28 Dec 1814, Roane Co., TN.  Moses was born 27 Apr 1795, Pulaski, Giles, TN; died 22 Sept 1876, Silas, Choctaw, AL. John W. DeShazer3 (Keziah2, Matthias1) was born c1793, Amelia Co., VA, as he reported in the 1850 census of Charlotte Co., VA20; died 17 June 1862, Charlotte Co., VA21; married Sally A.  She was born c1800, Charlotte Co., VA; died after 17 June 1862.  John's death record identified Henry and K. DeShazer as his parents, with the informant being his widow.  This couple may have had other children.  In 1820, John lived alone in Buckingham Co., VA.22  In Charlotte Co., VA in 1830, his household consisted of 01000101-00101.23  In 1840, again in Charlotte Co., we find 0001001-100001, along with 14 slaves.24  John hasn't been found in 1850.  In 1860, Bettie Hawkins and William B. Hawkins, both aged 25, lived with them.25

No documentary proof has been found naming Nancy's mother.  However, since Nancy appears to have been born within a year of the marriage of Henry and Keziah Williams DeShazer, it seems likely that she is a daughter of Keziah.

John3 (John2, Matthias1) was born c1791, probably Campbell Co., VA.  He died after the 1860 census.31  W.R. Williams was appointed administrator of the estate of one John Williams in July 1874.  John married (1) Elizabeth Duncan, born c1790; died 1852 (2) Amy Harbin Crenshaw, mother of his daughter-in-law, Eliza Jane Crenshaw.  Elizabeth was reportedly the sister of Craven Duncan.  Craven married (1) Mary Shannon c1829, possibly in VA (2) Parthenia Hunter Butler, 6 June 1841, probably Morgan Co., TN. Court records and a curious land deed filed by John Williams may shed more light on this man.  In July 1818, Anderson Co., TN one John Williams is charged with bastardy by Henry Farmer, in behalf of Joasy Farmer.  This John Williams is ordered to pay past and future expenses for the upkeep of this child.32  Then, in Morgan County, on 13 June 1856, John filed a land deed that was dated 6 June 1836.33  In it, he states that his lawful wife is Elizabeth, formerly Duncan.  Elizabeth died after the 1850 census and possibly before this deed was filed, in order to spare her embarrassment.  John also mentions daughter Polly Henderson, wife of Ambrose Henderson and son John Williams.  John is declared to be his only lawful heir.  John further states that one Aza Morgan, late of Morgan County but now living elsewhere, charged John with being the father of her son, William Riley Morgan, and that he, John, does not doubt the fact.  When Aza left the county, she gave up the child to John to raise him, which he did.  John asked that W.R. Morgan be allowed to legally change his name to W.R. Williams and that the children be recognized as joint heirs.  Later, in the 1860’s, John filed several more land deeds.34  One, in particular, named his daughters, Mary, wife of John Hall, and Saluda, wife of Joseph Bradshaw.  The census shows Mary Hall to have been born c1815.  It appears that Mary was the illegitimate daughter of Joasy Farmer.

  Children:

i. Mary, born 1 May 1815, TN, died 5 Mar 1883, Morgan Co., TN; married (1) Ambrose Henderson who may have died before 1840. She then married (2) John Hall, c1841, probably Morgan Co., TN.  John and Mary are buried at Elizabeth Cemetery, Morgan Co.

Judah3 (?John2, Matthias1) was born c1796, probably Campbell Co., VA; died after 1860; married Humphrey Thacker, 2 Jan 1832, Roane Co., Tennessee.  Judah is not a proven child of John.  Benjamin Thacker, a possible father to Humphrey, lived next door to John in 1830 in Morgan Co.35  However, while John Williams applied for his 1832 pension in Morgan Co., Benjamin applied in Roane Co. In 1840, the Thackers are in Roane Co. as 00000001-1100001.36  The Thackers were living in Anderson Co. in 185037 and again in 1860.38  Humphrey is 75, Judah 73 in that census.

Paul M.3 (William2, Matthias1) was born 23 Aug 1801, probably Cumberland Co., VA; died 1830-40.  He is in Marion Co., TN for the 1830 census, with an adult female and young children.56  However, there is no trace of Paul M. in 1840 or later.  It appears that this Paul M. married Mary Davis.  She was born 19 Dec 1807; died 7 Dec 1888, TN.  She married (2) Noah Stonecipher, c1840, probably Morgan Co., TN, as his second wife.  Noah married (1) Mary Duncan, cAug 1830.  He was born 26 Feb 1804, NC; died 8 July 1875, TN.  Both are buried at Davis Cemetery, Morgan Co., TN.  Mary was living alone, age 72, in the 1880 census of District 1 of Morgan County.57 Family lore states that Mary Davis had several children with “Mr. Williams”.  One son died in the Mexican War and another died at Belle Isle, VA during the Civil War.  In addition, Jesse Stonecipher’s daughter, Mary Dow, married a William or William M. Williams.  The 1860 census58, Morgan Co. shows William and Mary D. Williams, with several children – John, Mary E., Susan F., Jane and Paul M.  In 1870, Mary D. is head of household.59  A Civil War envelope in the Wartburg, TN Library says William M. Williams, Pvt. Co. B, 2nd TN Infantry, born 1831, died 3 March 1864, military prison.  Married Mary D. Stonecipher 17 Oct 1849, born 1832.”  William and Mary Stonecipher Williams named a son “Paul M.”  A strong case can be made that this William was the son of Mary Davis Stonecipher who died at Belle Isle and that Mary was married first to Paul M. Williams, who died before 1840.

  Children:

i. Son, born 1826-30.  This son may be Henry Williams, a private in Co. C, 4th Infantry.  He enlisted at Kingston 30 Sept 1847, aged 21.  He died 5 April 1848 at Molino del Rey, during the Mexican War.  This is the only Williams who enlisted in the Roane/Morgan Co. area who was reported as dead during the war.
ii. William, born 1831; TN; died 3 Mar 1864, Belle Isle, VA; married Mary Dow Stonecipher, 17 Oct 1849, probably Morgan Co., TN.   She was the daughter of Jesse Stonecipher.  Mary D. was born c1833; died after 1870.

Shackelford, 30 Aug 1855, Roane Co. She may be the Millie Williams who married Wash Harrison, 10 Jan 1867, Roane, TN.  If so, then Millie and Matthias divorced. (3) Elizabeth, married c1865. She was born c1835, TN.  Matthias is found in Roane County in the 1860 census.62  Besides three children apparently from Matthias’ first marriage, there are two girls, ages 2 and 6 months. Matthias and Rebecca may have had other children. Rebecca was born 1800-10; died probably 1840-50.

Sarah Mahon4 (Polly3, Matthias2, Matthias1) was born c1802, VA; died after 1870, probably Putnam Co., TN; married Josiah Bullington, 2 Dec 1822, Pittsylvania Co., VA. Josiah was the son of William Crenshaw and Jane Harris Bullington.  He was born c1790-1800 according to the 1830 census, but born 28 Mar 1801, VA according to an undocumented  Bullington family history13; died after 1870, probably Putnam Co., TN.14  William and Jane were living in Putnam Co., TN in 1850.15  Josiah’s family is in Henry Co. in 1830.16 Josiah was a buyer at the estate sale of Pleasant in 1843. The Bullingtons have not been located in 1840, but in 1850,17 they lived in Rockingham Co., NC, where Josiah was an overseer.  He owned no real estate, but had personal property worth $1000.  There were likely about three more children born in the 1830’s, but who were not in the 1850 household.  By 1855, Josiah Bullington appeared on the first Putnam Co., TN tax list.18

  Children: (Bullington)

i. Mary, born c1824, VA; died 1860-70, probably Putnam Co., TN; married William R. Hutcherson, 7 Oct 1845, Rockingham Co., NC.  He was born 25 Dec 1825, NC; died 30 May 1862; buried in  Overton Co., TN.  Census age in 1850 indicates a birth year of 1824 for William.
ii. Son, born c1827; died after 1830.
iii. Julia, born c1828, VA; died after 1870, probably Putnam Co., TN; married Permenas Lansford, 3 Apr 1848, Rockingham Co., NC.  He was born c1823, VA; died 1860-70, probably Putnam Co., TN.

vi. ?Henry, born c1839, NC; married Margaret, living in Putnam Co., TN in 1860.  The 1850 Rockingham Co., NC census was difficult to read.  No Henry is shown in the household of Josiah Bullington.  However, Louisa is listed as a male and then there is a 9 year old female also there.  Could the census taker have mixed up Louisa and Henry, with Louisa actually 9 and a female and Henry the 11 year old male?  The census taker left the name space for the 9 year old totally blank.  He may have switched two children and then not corrected it.  Henry is the only other Bullington besides Josiah with NC connections.  The fact that Henry named his first son Josiah lends credence to the belief that he is a son of Josiah and Sarah.  The only other Henry in his age range is a 19 year old Henry in the household of Henry Bullington in 1860.19
vii. Louisa, born c1839, NC.  Listed as a male in 1850.

Shepherd Mahon4 (Polly3, Matthias2, Matthias1) was born 17 Mar 1807, VA; died 3 Sept 1843, probably Osage Co., MO20; married Nancy Griggs, 9 Dec 1832, Pittsylvania Co., VA.  She was born 22 Mar 1807, VA; died 17 Aug 1868, probably Osage Co., MO. Both are buried at Pilot Knob Baptist Church Cemetery, Osage Co., just inside the county line near Belle, Maries, MO.   Shepherd is in Gasconade Co., MO in 1840.21  Osage County was formed from Gasconade.  In the Osage Co. marriage records one is found for Nancy Mahon to Abraham Creider, 8 Nov 1845.  In the 1850 Osage County census,22 Abraham Creider is found with Nancy, 43, born VA, Monroe, 3, born MO, Martin J., 1, born MO and the four Mahon children. Abraham apparently died by 1860,23 when Nancy is single head of household in Jefferson Twp. Osage Co., MO, living with George W. Crider 17, (probably George Mahon), Monroe C. William H.4 (Matthias3, Matthias2, Matthias1) was born c1814, Morgan, TN. He died after 1860.48  He may be the William H. Williams who perhaps married Sarah Ann Parker, 30 June 1835, Rhea Co., TN.  Matthias, his father, was living in Rhea County in the 1830’s.  Also, William H. would have turned 21 in 1835, the right age for a first marriage.  However, if so, then by 1850,49 there is no trace of any children born 1835-1844.  Sarah may have died, or they may have divorced and she remarried, taking any children with her.  There is a marriage record in nearby Campbell Co. for one William H. Williams and Pricilla (sic) Newport on 26 Aug 1840, but it is not known if it is the same man.  William may have perhaps married Sarah Row, 25 Sept 1843, Roane Co.  This marriage date is consistent with the births of children beginning c1844.  This man is definitely the son of Matthias, as Matthias was living with them in the 1860 census.  The family was gone after the Civil War.

viii. Sametha, born c1858, TN.

Thomas4 (?Matthias3, Matthias2, Matthias1) was born c1819, TN.  He married Recta, c 1844.  Recta was born c1829, Canada, according to the 1850 census.50 Thomas is not a proven son of Matthias.  However, Matthias had a male of Thomas’ age in his household in 1830.  Also, William H. had a daughter named Recta, which appears to be an unusual name, and that is also the name of Thomas’ wife.  The younger Recta may have been named for her aunt.  Also, Matthias’ brother, Thomas, died in 1814 and this presumed son may have been named for the deceased.  This family is gone by 1860.

Children:

i. Enoch M., born c1845, TN; died after 1850.

Martha P.4 (Matthias3, Matthias2, Matthias1) was born Mar 1825, Petros, Morgan, TN; died  shortly before 7 Mar 1910, Rhea Co., TN.51  She is not a proven daughter of Matthias.  However, she married Horace M. Smith, 30 Jan 1845, Rhea Co.  Matthias was the Williams who lived there in that time period.  Horace was born c1826, Rhea Co.; died c1894, Rhea Co.52  The family was in Barry Co., MO in 1850,53 Rhea Co. in 1870,54 188055 and 1900, but has not been found in 1860.  In 1900, Martha reported that she had given birth to 12 children, 9 of whom were living.56

John is not a proven son of this John.  However, an undated newspaper article found in the Morgan County Library Williams genealogy file discussed the history of property bought by Holman Tanner.  He and his wife bought the John B. Williams house.  John B. is named as a son of John and Eliza Williams and a descendant of John Williams, a Revolutionary War soldier.  With the names John, William and Matthias in among the sons of John and Eliza, it appears that this line fits in as descendants of John, the Morgan County Revolutionary War pensioner.  In 187092, John was a farmer and sheriff.  He lived in District 8 of Morgan County with his family. In 1880, Eliza was head of household, running a boarding house.93   Gustavus C. was a deputy sheriff.

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Loose Ends in Eastern Tennessee

There are still a number of unplaced Williamses in the early records of eastern Tennessee.  Some, most likely, are part of the Williams clan from Cumberland County, but their relationships have not yet been proven.

Reuben Draper (one record names him as Reuben, but another says Benton) m. Lucina Williams on 5 Jan. 1820.  Nothing more is known about them.  Similarly, Ralph Lane m. Mary Williams on 26 Aug. 1824, James Monds married Polly Williams on 5 Aug. 1821 and Cornelius Curvine married Sally Williams on 4 Dec. 1827.  Edward Williams married Merrill Hotchkiss on 24 June 1830.  He appears to have had problems with debt and insolvency as seen in a land deed from the 1830's and is too old to be John and Polly Lee Williams' son, also named Edward.  Joseph Williams married Julia Ann Lower on 30 Sept 1831.  He was the son of Frederick and Elizabeth Williams who migrated from North Carolina to Knox Co. TN.1 John Vann married Tabitha Williams 13 Aug 1835 and John E. Williams married Polly Cofer on 29 Jan 1836. William M. Greene married Lucy Williams on 2 Sept 1838.  Jeremiah Soward married Elinder Williams on 5 Dec 1846.  There are other marriages post-1850. Nothing further is known of these couples, except that Ralph Lane appears in the 1830 and 1840 censuses of Roane County.

Williams is a very common surname and even though there were not many of that name in the very early records of eastern Tennessee, it is to be expected that some of these men were not related in any way.  The following Williams families lived in the area, but at this time, no apparent relationship to the Cumberland County, Virginia men has been discovered.

Powell Williams lived in Roane County for many years, although it does not appear that he was in the area before the 1820’s.  In Goochland Co., VA, Powell Williams married Lucy Woodward on 17 October 1796.  He had two brothers, Edward and Samuel, and perhaps others.  They were children of Powell and Lucy Haines Williams of Goochland Co.  Powell evidently married a second time to Mary (?).  When Lucy died is unknown, so his children may be by either wife.

 Children:

 i.    Abel, born c1800; died c1848.  Wife was Susan, probably Stegall.
ii.   Mary, born c1803; married William L. Foute on 17 Feb 1824 in Roane Co.
i. Nancy, born c1807; married Jacob Utley 19 Feb. 1827 in Roane Co.
iv.  Son, born c1814; died after 1830.
 v.   Elizabeth, born c1819, VA; married James Isham on 24 September 1837 in Roane Co.

Mary, Nancy, Abel and Elizabeth are placed in Powell’s family because they lived in his neighborhood, which was somewhat removed from the areas where the other Williams were living.  In addition, in the case of Nancy who married Jacob Utley, she was placed in Powell’s family because of Williams’ ties to Utleys in Goochland Co.

Nancy Williams who married Joseph McMinn was the widow of Willoughby Williams of Anderson Co.  Joseph McMinn was a governor of Tennessee.  This Williams family came from North Carolina and was related to Andrew Jackson.  They were in an entirely different economic and social circle than the Virginia group.

Jonathan Williams married Rachel Roberts in 1803.  There was a Jonathan Williams who lived in Knox Co. and this may be the same man.  However, there are no records linking Jonathan to the Roane/Anderson/Morgan area except for the lone marriage record.

Frederick Williams appears in the Anderson County 1830 census.  Three and thirteen doors away, respectively, are Thomas and Alexander Williams who may be part of Frederick’s family.  Frederick can also be identified through Revolutionary War pension records (R11603).  Frederick married Nancy McNabb on 1 October 1774 in Guilford County, North Carolina.  He died in the spring of 1831 on his way to Arkansas.  When he left Tennessee, he had been a resident of Morgan County.  He was about 83 when he died.  His widow applied for a pension in Overton County, TN, aged 91, on 21 June 1851.  The couple’s first child was born in 1776.  Their surviving children in 1851 included Elizabeth Fraley, 59, William Williams, 54, Cynthia Moore, 52, Elijah Williams, 51, Mary Medlock, 43, John Williams, 41 and Hardin C. Williams, 38.  Place of residence of these children is not given in the file.  In 1852, the widow lived with son, Elijah, in Jackson County, Tennessee.

Samuel Williams who married Nancy Hockins (perhaps Hawkins?) in Roane in 1802 lived in Anderson Co.  Samuel applied for a Revolutionary War pension in Anderson Co. on 18 May 1840 (R11619).  In it, he stated that he was born in Orange Co., NC, but lived in Greenville District, SC during the war.  After the war, he removed to the “Chucky River” in eastern Tennessee and lived in Anderson County by about 1800.  He did not name his wife or any children.  Land records in Anderson County indicate that there was a younger Samuel there at the same time.  The second Samuel also had a wife named Nancy and he appears to be a son of Samuel Sr.

Benjamin Williams lived in Knox County by 1830.  Because Samuel Williams of Cumberland County, VA also had a Benjamin who moved to eastern TN, this Knox County man warranted investigation.  Again, the Revolutionary War pension files provide information (W1119, BLW 26213-160-55).  Benjamin applied for a pension in Knox County in 1832.  He stated that he was 91 years old at the time.  He lived 6 miles from Abingdon, VA when he enlisted the first time.  On 1 May 1777, he moved to North Carolina and enlisted again in that state.  The soldier died 5 June 1835 and his widow applied for a pension in Knox County on 5 September 1853, aged 50 years.  His widow’s name was Nancy, so it seems that this couple is the same Benjamin Williams and Nancy Israel who married in Knox County on 9 December 1829.  The DAR Patriot Index shows Benjamin as born in VA in 1742, dying in Tennessee on 5 June 1835 and having as his first wife Susannah Collins.  Nancy is listed as a second spouse.

There is one final puzzle regarding the Williamses to be found in the 1830 census.  There are two known men who are part of this family, both elderly by 1830, residing in Roane or Morgan Cos.  However, the 1830 census shows John Williams of Morgan Co., 000000001-0000011001.  This John was born in the 1760’s.  In Roane Co., p. 57, John Williams is found, 01110001-00011001.  This John matches the age of John who married Polly Lee. He was born in the 1770’s. This John is only doors away from some Fritts, Soward, and Kimbrell families with known marriage links to the Williamses.  Then, on  p. 63, John Williams is again found, this time doors from the Gallahers, listed as 011100001-1120001.  This John also matches the age of the pensioner, who stated he was born in June 1761. The mystery of this third elderly John Williams may have an answer in the Revolutionary War pension files.  A John J. Williams, who fought with the North Carolina line, lived in Wilkes Co., NC during the War.  About 1805, he moved to Tennessee, living in Jackson and Overton Counties for 19 years.  Then he spent short periods of time living in McMinn, Bledsoe, Rhea and Roane Counties.  He applied for a pension in Roane County on 13 September 1832, stating that he was 73 years old.  In 1847, he moved to Georgia to be with his children.  He died 6 October 1849 in Georgia.  In 1848, Hiram Williams, no relationship stated, gave an affadivit.  The soldier married Nancy on either 3 or 5 June 1815 in Fentress County, but both were of Anderson County when they married.  After John died, his widow lived in Anderson and Campbell Counties, TN and she applied for a widow’s pension on 16 January 1860 in Campbell County, aged about 75.  Children were not named in either application.  John born in 1761 applied for his pension in Morgan County.  As John J. applied in Roane and is in the same age bracket as John of Morgan, it seems reasonable to conclude that the second John in Roane County in 1830 was actually John J. Williams.
