ABSTRACTS OF THE WILL, GUARDIAN AND ESTATE PAPERS OF WILLIAM HUGHES 1763-1773

WILL OF WILLIAM HUGHES - WILL BOOK 1, PAGE 345
At a court held for Cumberland County the 24th day of October 1763.
Edmund Clements and Robert Douglas junior being called swore to the nuncupative will of William Hughes deceased say that the said William Hughes in his last sickness and at his house in this county declared that Simon Hughes should keep his estate mother and daughter together until his daughter should want it - only to sell the beasts but one and to keep that for the daughter and said Edmund and Robert further say that the said William at the making the above declaration the sd William was in his proper senses.
Whereupon on the motion of the said Simon Hughes who made oath according to
law certificate is granted him for obtaining letters of administration of the
estate of William Hughes dec'd. Whereupon he entered into bond with Robert
Douglass and James Moss his securities.

GUARDIAN APPOINTMENT - ORDER BOOK 1770-1772, PAGE 312
August 26, 1771 - Present: George Carrington & Joseph Carrington, Gentleman
Elizabeth Hughes orphan of William Hughes deceased with approbation of the
court made choice of Simon Hughes to be her guardian whereupon the said Simon
with Samuel Taylor his security entered into bond with condition according
to law.

TO cash paid Trents Scott & Co. by acc't proved.
TO Jacob Winfree sen'r by acc't proved

TO 3 barrels corn bought for the estate
TO fodder & 5 bushels wheat for the estate
1765 - to 10 barrels corn for the estate

TO Isaac Winfree by account proved
TO fees for recording the will, certificate & appraisement. 231 lbs net
tobacco
TO paid the 3 brothers & 1 sister of the said William Hughes their claim
against his estate on account of their father estate 25/ each (total 5.0.0)
TO paying the quitrents levies & tax's & providing goods for the use
of the family & plantation while the estate was in my care - allowed by
consent of Samuel Taylor Jun'r who intermarried with the only daughter of William
Hughes.

1763 - Dec 10 - by cash rec'd of Wm. Clarke in part of his debt.

1767 - July 10 - by one mare.
1768 - Octr 10 - by one mare & colt, Oct 12 - by 655 lbs pork
1769 - Octr 10 - by steer, by 570 lbs beef
1770 - Octr 8 - by 212 lbs, by 1 Taylors goose
1771 - June 5 - by 50 lbs beef

By 1/4 crop of Tob'o made in 1771 - 684 lbs
By 1/4 crop of corn made same year - 15 barrels
By 1/4 crop of wheat made same year - 10 bushels
Cumberland County Sc. In obedience to an order of the court of the said county
we the subscribers have settled Simon Hughes his account of the administration
of the estate of William Hughes deceased as above stated without his the
said Simons making oath thereto by consent of Samuel Taylor Jun'r who intermarried
with the only child and daughter of the said William Hughes.
Given under our hand this February 15th 1773.

returned and ordered to be recorded.
