The Elizabeth McIntosh Hammill Chapter was organized May 23, 1945 by Mrs. Robert LeRoy Byrd. The chapter is named after Elizabeth McIntosh Hammill who was the daughter of William McIntosh, a private in the American Revolution.
William McIntosh was born in 1755 in Prince William County, Virginia and enlisted in the Virginia Regiment in Dunfries on February 4, 1776. He served as a private in Captain Thomas Ewell’s company of Colonel George Gibson’s regiment. His initial enlistment was for two years, but he re-enlisted and served another three years.
William fought in the battles of Monmouth and Stony Point as well as other minor engagements and skirmishes. He wintered at Valley Forge in 1777 and 1778. After his discharge from the military, he returned to Dunfries, Virginia. He applied for a pension November 4, 1818. He died on October 25, 1846 at age 91, in Mashulaville, Mississippi. |
