The Circuit Court Clerk's Office houses all extant records for Essex County with the exception of loose wills and some court papers which have been transferred to the Library of Virginia. In addition to the bound will, deed, order and guardian books, marriage, birth and death registers, there are general index volumes available for wills and deeds. The records of Rappahannock County, the county which in 1692 was divided into Essex and Richmond counties, are also available at this office.
The records can be examined in person during the hours of 8:30 am until 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, except for state holidays. (Note: In Virginia, Columbus Day is a state holiday.) Photocopies of county records may be obtained by mail with the book and page citation. Address requests for copies to: Circuit Court Clerk's Office, P. O. Box 445, Tappahannock, VA 22560.
My thanks to Ms. Agnes Andrews, and Ms. Carolyn Spencer, Clerk's Office staff, for furnishing information for this section.
