I love Carter's Run. The Free State Mountains are found to the West and the Rappahannock Mountains are on the East. Carter's Run meanders through both mountain ranges from the Area of the Free State to Waterloo where in flows into the Rappahannock River. It is my hope that this is a beginning place to begin to determine more closely where our ancestors lived. If I have left off your ancestors land mark please let Jim Burgess know.
Carter's Run actually begins at the area that has been called the Boundary of the Free State. The small stream runs past the:
Carter's Run Valley or Route 691 goes North at Marshall, South to a small place which the map calls Ogie. Route 691 continues north and south; however, for the purposes of review Carter's Run Valley goes from Marshall to Ogdie and Route 689. Carter's Run a small stream sometimes runs through Carter's Run Valley and sometimes Carter's Run is a few miles to the east. After passing Ogdie and Will Moffett Road Carter's Run meanders around sometimes near 689 and sometimes several miles away in the country side. Carter's Run then crosses the Mary Stuphin Road Route 681. Carter's Run continues its winding path until it enters the Rappahannock River at Waterloo, Virginia
From North to South some of the names remembered mostly by the past are:
South of Ogide Road the land marks are fewer as Carter's run moves through a less populated area. The next places of note are:
My aunt's notes show Nancy & Henry's dau. Leticia/Letty Bailey Cockrill is buried at Allison Farm, Rt 691, near Marshall [Moffett- Heflin Cem.] Henry's bro. Carr m. Elizabeth Cockrill 1828, and Henry's dau. Leticia Bailey m. 1848 Thomas [John Thomas?] Cockrill. It is this Leticia's tombstone that says she was a member of the Old School Baptist Church. Jeanne Barton
Now, Edward and Letty's dau. Nancy Alice Ball was born "on Carter's Run." I think another dau. m. a Hinson [don't have my records nearby at the moment]. Nancy m. Henry Bailey [probable of Joseph, of Carr Bailey] 1817. I can't remember if any of the family married Dulins, but I know the name is everywhere they are. Dulins wit. a couple of family deeds.
