Use This Form to Share Information About
People Who Moved Out of Floyd County

Thank you for helping us gather information about folks, including yourself, who moved away from Floyd County at some time during our 175 year history. Reading all the questions before you begin to respond will probably save you time as well as help you organize your thoughts. Please add any other information you’d like to share, and use as much extra paper as you need. Feel free to skip any questions you can’t or prefer not to answer. Please mail the completed form and any additional pages to Ricky Cox, 1014 Indian Creek Road, Willis, VA 24380, or send your response(s) by email to rcox@radford.edu

1) What is the name or names of the person or people who moved away from Floyd County, and what, if any, relation are they to you? (To save space, from here on we’ve used the word “they” to mean either an individual or a family or other group of people. Substitute the word “you” if the story you are telling here is your own.)

2) Approximately when did they leave? (a decade is fine if you don’t know the year—“the 1940’s,” for example)

3) Do you know why they left Floyd County? Common reasons include looking for work, following a spouse, following extended family, serving in the military, or just wanting to see a little more of the world. There are certainly other reasons, as well.

4) Where did they first move to after leaving Floyd County?

5) Did they have friends or relatives already living there and did these acquaintances help them find jobs and a place to live? Or even provide a home for them, at first?

6) What other cities, states, or countries did they live in before settling down?

7) Where did they ultimately settle down and why?

8) How did they make a living there?

9) Are they still living in or near that place?

10) If not, do they have descendants or other family still living there?

11) Has this person or family maintained ties with people still living here in Floyd County?

12) Did they (a family or any individual) ever move back to or near Floyd County?  When and why?

If you have information to share about another individual or group, feel free to duplicate this page or to simply write down the numbers of the questions followed by your responses to them, as they pertain to other former Floyd Countians you know or know about.

If we can find time and people to take this project beyond a survey, would you like to be contacted by someone interested in learning more about what you’ve told us? Yes_____   No_________
